WISLAWA SZYMBORSKA. First Day Cover signed: "Wislawa

postmarked Carmel, CA, August 13, 1973, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Polish poet
Wislawa Szymborska was awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature "for
poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context
to come to light in fragments of human reality." Since publishing her debut poem
in 1945, Szymborska has published 16 works of collected poems and has
also translated French poetry. From 1953-1981, she served as poetry editor
and columnist for "Zycie Literackie", a Kraków literary weekly, which
published a collection of her lectures. Her numerous awards include the
Goethe Prize (1991) and the Herder Prize (1995). Slightly rippled.
Ink note (unknown hand) on verso, which is lightly soiled and has light show
through of embossing. Fine condition.
