WITOLD R. LUTOSLAWSKI
Signed card bearing a clipped photo of the Polish composer
Photograph Mount signed: "Witold Lutoslawski", 6x4. Clipped photo
(b/w, 2¼x2¾) affixed to left of signature. Polish conductor and composer
Witold R. Lutoslawski (1913-1994), perhaps best known for his "Concerto
for Orchestra" (1954), also composed four symphonies, a string quartet, and
several songs and instrumental numbers. His early compositions were
influenced by Polish folk music. He later developed a quite distinctive style of
his own, building harmonies from small groups of musical intervals, and also
aleatoric processes (in which the rhythmic coordination of parts is subject to
an element of chance). A soldier captured by the Germans in 1939, Lutoslawski
escaped, and spent the war years playing piano in Warsaw cafes. He had problems
with the communist government, too, which claimed his "formalistic" style was
too elitist. He lent support to the Solidarity movement of 1980 by
refusing to give performances in Poland, except to groups of workers. Pencil
note (unknown hand). Corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
