WOODSTOCK MUSIC AND ART FESTIVAL: MELANIE, MARTY BALIN, TOM CONSTANTEN, WAVY GRAVY, JERRY MARTINI, JOE MCDONALD, CYNTHIA ROBINSON, JOHN SEBASTIAN, JUMA SULTAN, EDGAR WINTER
This is a large signed 14x11 color photo of the album cover for the three-disc soundtrack of the documentary Woodstock. Most of the signers appeared on the soundtrack, and they all represent all four days of the legendary Woodstock music festival.
Photograph signed "Juma Sultan", "Wavy G", "Tom Constanten", "Country Joe", "Jerry Martini", "John Sebastian", "Cynthia/Robinson", "Marty Balin", "Love/ Melanie" and "Edgar Winter", all in blue ink. Melanie has added a drawing of a flower next to her name, and McDonald has added a peace symbol next to his. McDonald has also written the lyrics for The Fish Cheer that he used during his solo act on the first day of Woodstock: "Gimme a F/Gimme a U/Gimme a C/Gimme a K". Color, 13¾x10¾ overall, 11x10¾ image, one surface. Photo of the album cover for the three-disc soundtrack of the documentary Woodstock. This documentary was shot during the legendary four-day Woodstock Music and Art Festival in1969. Most of the signers featured on this photo were featured on the documentary's soundtrack, which was released as a three-disc set by Cotillion and Atlantic Records in 1970. This photo is also special because its signers represent all four days of the festival. Political activist WAVY GRAVY was master of ceremonies (and the only person to appear on the bill at all three Woodstock festivals). He was also part of the Hog Farm Collective hippie commune, which was put in charge of security at Woodstock. Wavy Gravy called this odd security force the "Please Force" based on their low-key methods at keeping order. MELANIE (given name Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk) was one of the last acts on Aug. 15, the first day of the festival. She performed before Arlo Guthrie and Joan Baez. McDONALD was lead singer for Country Joe and the Fish. He had a solo performance as the third act of Aug. 16. He also joined Country Joe and the Fish to play a short set after Joe Cocker on Aug. 17, the last official day of the festival. Country Joe and the Fish went on a rainstorm that briefly ground the festival to a halt. SEBASTIAN performed immediately after Country Joe and the Fish on Aug. 16; he had left The Lovin' Spoonful in 1968 and performed as a solo act. CONSTANTEN was keyboardist for Grateful Dead, which performed midway through Aug. 16, the second day of the festival. MARTINI and ROBINSON were, respectively, saxophonist and trumpeter with Sly and the Family Stone, which played after Grateful Dead and Creedence Clearwater Revival. BALIN was a co-founder of Jefferson Airplane, which closed out the Woodstock's second day. EDGAR WINTER appeared with brother and Blues man Johnny Winter early on Aug. 18 and was one of the last acts at Woodstock. But the honor of last act went to Gypsy Sun and the Rainbows, with Jimi Hendrix backed up by SULTAN, among others; they were billed as The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Lightly creased, otherwise in fine condition.
