Documentary Letter signed: "Woody Herman", 1 page, 8½x11. New
York, N.Y., 1949 July 6. Herman signs his consent to the release by Columbia
Records of an LP album including his recording of "Bijou" and 7 swing-era jazz
recordings, one each by Harry James, Claude Thornhill, Count Basie, Benny
Goodman, Jack Jenny, Bunny Berrigan and Bobby Hackett. A second paragraph
addresses royalty payments. Woody Herman (1913-1987), born Woodrow
Charles Wilson, was an American jazz clarinetist, alto and soprano saxophonist,
singer, and big band leader. Beginning in 1936, he led a succession of
popular bands, each called "The Thundering Herd". The bands often played
music that was experimental for its time. His was named the best big band of
1946 by several music magazines. He won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
in 1987 and was a featured halftime performer for Super Bowl VII. Two filing
holes at top margin - torn through to edge. Left edge notched at upper section.
