WRIGHT PATMAN
His signature on a piece of cotton fabric originally intended for use in patchwork quilt
Ephemera signed: "Wright Patman/M. C. Texas", 4¼x2½ strip of pink cotton cloth originally intended for use in a patchwork quilt. Ink note (unknown hand): 1934. Democrat John William Wright Patman (1893-1976) represented the first Congressional District of Texas in the US House from 1929 until his death. In 1932, he sponsored a bill to fight the Depression by an immediate bonus payment to all World War I veterans, a move which triggered the march on Washington by the "Bonus Army". That same year, he called for the impeachment of President Hoover's Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon, leading to Mellon's resignation. In 1936 the populist Democrat secured passage of the Robinson-Patman Act, prohibiting manufacturers from offering lower prices to national chain stores than to other retailers. Patman chaired the House Banking and Currency Committee (1965-1975), ousted in a rebellion against the seniority system which deprived three veteran House members of their chairmanships. Lose thread from cloth. Otherwise, fine condition.
