Bandleader Xavier Cugat, the Rumba King, signed this two-year contract with RKO Radio Pictures in 1950 to appear in three films.
Contract signed "Xavier Cugat" in green in and by vice-president of RKO Radio Pictures, Inc. in black ink. Blue and lead pencil notations in unknown hand and black ink stamps. 23 pages, 8½x13, partial carbon copy, with two file holes at top edge, bound with two staples at top edge. March 15, 1950. Under this contract, Cugat was to appear in three RKO Radio pictures during a period of two years (104 weeks). He received $5,000 per week while shooting these pictures. Cugat had a few appearances on TV during this contract's period but, to our knowledge, no movie credits. Orchestra leader Cugat (1900-1990) is best known as "The Rumba King" for introducing U. S. audiences to Latin rhythms. Born Francisco de Asis Javier Cugat Mingall de Bel y Deulogeo in Spain, Cugat grew up in Havana, and the teenaged violin prodigy toured with Enrico Caruso before coming to the U. S. Cugat worked as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times while organizing his first bands, and by 1928, he and his band were playing at the Cocoanut Grove in Hollywood.Cugat appeared in a number of feature films, usually as himself. His wives included singer Abbe Lane (1952 until their divorce in 1963) and entertainer Charo (1966 until their divorce in 1978). Lightly toned and creased. Last page is separating from contract.
