XAVIER CUGAT and ABBE LANE
White match book signed by Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat and singer Abbe Lane, Cugat's first wife, in pencil
Match book signed "Cugat" and "Abbe Lane", both in pencil. Blue ink notations on verso in unknown hand. 4½x1¾. Blank white match book cover. According to the notations on verso, Cugat and Lane signed this matchbook on Oct. 11, 1962. Orchestra leader CUGAT (1900-1990) is best known as "The Rumba King" for introducing U. S. audiences to Latin rhythms. Born Francisco de Asis Javier Cugat Mingall de Bel y Deulogeo in Spain, Cugat grew up in Havana, and the teenaged violin prodigy toured with Enrico Caruso before coming to the U. S. Cugat worked as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times while organizing his first bands, and by 1928, he and his band were playing at the Cocoanut Grove in Hollywood. Cugat appeared in a number of feature films, usually as himself. His wives included singer Abbe Lane (1952 until their divorce in 1963) and entertainer Charo (1966 until their divorce in 1978). Born Abigail Francine Lassman in Brooklyn, New York City in 1932, LANE was best known as a sexy singer of Latin music, a style she perfected while married (1952-1964) to Xavier Cugat, the Cuban "rumba king". The fiery redhead, who made occasional film and frequent TV guest appearances, once quipped: "Jayne Mansfield may turn the boys into men, but I take it from there." The sultry singer and actress is also an author. Lightly toned. Signatures are lightly smudged but legible. Staple holes at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
