YÄEL DAYAN and EDIIE BASINSKI
The Israeli author and politician signed this note in Portland, on a sheet with a youthful newspaper photo and press clipping. Signed on verso by Eddie Basinski, a star of Portland baseball.
Autograph Note signed: "Yäel Dayan/Portland27.3.61", 7¾x10. Signed below her note in Hebrew. Affixed to the page are a press photo and newspaper clipping from an interview, in which she lauds the advantages of living in Israel. Also signed on verso: "With my best wishes, George/Eddy Basinski", followed by a list of his professional baseball teams. YÄEL DAYAN (b. 1939), the daughter of famed Israeli General and Cabinet Minister Moshe Dayan, was a Captain in the Israeli Defense Force during the Six-Day War (June 1967), later writing a memoir of that experience. She has been a newspaper columnist and the author of five novels, as well as a biography of her father. She served in the Israeli Knesset from 1992 to 2003, as a member of the Labor Party. Now a member of the Meretz party, she sits on the Tel Aviv City Council. Dayan is a peace and women's rights activist who favors a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. EDDIE BASINSKI (b. 1922) was an infielder with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates between 1944 and 1947, but had a much longer career in the Pacific Coast League, most of it with the Portland Beavers (1947-1957). Before Major League baseball expanded to the West Coast in 1961, the PCL - with its long season - was considered nearly the equal of the American and National Leagues. Basinski is enshrined in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. This piece was acquired from George Sanders, a radio and TV interview host who collected autographs from guests on his show. Toned. Edges and corners lightly worn. Small tears in left edge. Ink note (unknown hand) in bottom right corner.
