The French Nobel Prize winner in chemistry for his petroleum research signs this photograph of his commemorative medal
Photograph signed: "Avec mon souvenir le meilleur [with my best remembrances]/Y. Chauvin" in French. B/w, 8x10 overall, image 4¼-inch diameter (one surface). Photograph of a medal struck for the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prizes. Yves Chauvin (1930-2015), honorary research director of the French Institute of Petroleum, was awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Robert H. Grubbs and Richard R. Schrock, for his work from the early 1970s in the area of olefin metathesis. Chauvin modestly downplayed his contribution, saying that he did his research 35 years ago and gained the prize only thanks to the additional work done by his American colleagues. Metathesis is used to create new types of molecules, a valuable technique in the pharmaceutical and advanced plastics industries. Thanks to the work of these Nobel Laureates, the creation of new products has become more efficient and more environmentally friendly. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
