Signature: "Z. Chandler/Mich", 3¼x1¾ card. "USS/162" has been added in pencil in another hand. Originally a Detroit business man, Zachariah Chandler (1813-1879) detested slavery, helped fund the Underground Railroad (of which Detroit was an important terminus), and helped escort anti-slavery voters to the polls through crowds of pro-slavery toughs who were trying to intimidate them. Elected Mayor of Detroit in 1851, Chandler was a founder of the Republican Party (1854). He represented Michigan in the US Senate (1857-1875), emerging as one of its most radical members: highly critical of President Lincoln for not moving swiftly enough to abolish slavery. He was one of the first to call for President Johnson's impeachment. Defeated in his bid for a fourth term, Chandler joined the Grant Cabinet as Secretary of the Interior (1875-1877), working to root out corruption in the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Returned to the Senate in 1879, Chandler had Presidential ambitions, but died unexpectedly in his Chicago hotel room while preparing to deliver a speech. Fine condition.
