ZANE GREY. TLS: "Zane Grey.", 1p, 8½x6¾. Long Key, Florida, 1917 January 24. On stationery of the Florida East Coast Hotel Co., Long Key Fishing Camp, to Miss Marion Plew, Dana Hall, Wellesly (sic), Massachusetts. In full: "Your letter received and I am delighted to send you my autograph. But it seems to me needful to tell you that I do not happen to be a Miss. Yours very truly". Four words (bolded) in Grey's hand. Grey, who authored some 78 books and numerous short stories, was also an avid fisherman and wrote numerous articles and books on the sport. He made numerous fishing trips to the Florida Keys, the Pacific Ocean off Catalina Island (where he later had a home), Mexico and Nova Scotia. The Long Key Fishing Camp was the setting for his book, Tales of Fishing, which was published two years after he signed this letter. Best known for his adventure stories of the American West, the novels of Zane Grey (1872-1939), a former dentist born Pearl Zane Gray, include Riders of the Purple Sage, Call of the Canyon and West of the Pecos. Grey, who was known as "The Father of the Western Novel", published at least one Western novel a year, many of which were made into feature films. Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold touches the upper portion of the "Z" and "G". Upper left corner cut off, chipped at blank edge at mid-vertical fold. Show through of ink at upper right margin. Silked on verso. Overall, fine condition.
