ZaSU PITTS
The actress signs on this matchbook in blue ink
Matchbook signed: "ZaSu Pitts" on outside cover, 4½x1½ when
opened. Plain white cover (no imprint). Her calculated vagueness, nervous speech
pattern and fluttery hand gestures (used by producers of the animated
Popeye cartoons for the Olive Oyl character) and catch phrase, "Oh, dear,
oh my", established ZaSu Pitts (1898-1963) as a top character comedian in the
1930s. Also a superb dramatic actress, she had played the lead in
Erich von Stroheim's ten-hour masterpiece, Greed (1924). ZaSu (named for
her Aunts Eliza and Susan) was known to television audiences as
Elvira "Nugey" Nugent on The Gale Storm Show (Oh! Susannah)
from 1956-1960. Usual folds, none at signature. Lightly soiled, light stain from
photo corner at upper right corner. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show
through). Otherwise, fine condition.
