HERBERT "ZEPPO" MARX. Check signed: "Zeppo Marx", 8¼x3¼. Los Angeles, California, 1979 March 9. Check No. 001850, drawn on his account at Security Pacific National Bank, payable to A. Leigh Wallace, D.D.S., Palm Springs, California for $30. Signed less than nine months before his death on November 29, 1979. Herbert "Zeppo" Marx (1901-1979), the youngest of the Marx Brothers, joined the act after brother Gummo's departure. Zeppo, who played the straight man to his brothers, starred in romantic roles with Groucho, Chico and Harpo on Broadway and in their first five films: The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers and Duck Soup. A talented mimic who could imitate and understudy all of his brothers in their zany characterizations, Zeppo left the act in 1933 to pursue other business interests, including running a talent agency. Somewhat of a mechanical whiz, Zeppo invented a wristwatch that would monitor the pulse rate of cardiac patients, and his company, Marman Products, produced clamping devices that were used in the first atomic bomb raids over Japan in 1945. "Paid" stamp on front, not at signature. Light show through of bank stamps on verso (not windowed to show verso). Staple holes to left of imprinted account information. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 22½x16.
