Affectionate 4-page reply to a suggestion that she write an article on Fannie Hurst. She declines because she is already contracted to write about Jane Addams.
Autograph Letter signed: "Zona Gale", 4 pages, 4¾x6¾. No place, no date. To "O Margaret dear". In full: "I have told the Harpers, only last week, that I cannot do this same thing for Fannie Hurst - on account of having signed a contract to do Jane Addams; and so I shouldn't, mustn't, turn about and say yes to you. But how deeply sorry I am you will know as well as I & I so love your caring to have me do this. It is something to be very proud about, and I am so indeed. Furthermore, you have been in my thought, there in that same guest room at the Taylor's that I know that you were. And I wondered, having preceded you in Mrs. North's apartment last summer, if we are never to synchronize. Well, we do, without the time element at all. But I wish that this lovely proof of it in your letter might meet a better proof from me in this reply. It is good to know that it brings us a bit nearer anyway - as it does, I know. Affectionately yours". Zona Gale (1874-1938), who wrote short stories, novels, biographies, poetry and plays, was the first female playwright on Broadway (Miss Lula Bett, 1920, a dramatization of her novel) and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (for the same work, 1921). Gale was active in reform movements, including the women's suffrage campaign. A frequent theme of her novels was the frustration of women with their lack of opportunities. Gale was a close friend of social reformer Jane Addams. Fannie Hurst was a prominent writer, also associated with progressive causes. Lightly toned and creased. One horizontal mailing fold. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
