A. MITCHELL PALMER
The Attorney General who led the "Red Scare" raids complies with a request from a Philadelphian.
Typed Letter signed: "A Mitchell Palmer" as Attorney General, 1 page, 6x8½. Washington, D.C., 1919 March 20. On official letterhead to H. S. J. Sickel, Esquire, Commercial Trust Building, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "I am very glad to comply with your request of the 18th instant. With very best wishes I am yours sincerely". Alexander Mitchell Palmer (1872-1936), who had represented Pennsylvania for three terms in the House of Representatives (1909-1915), became Attorney General in the final years of Woodrow Wilson's Presidency (1919-1921). As a Member of Congress, Palmer had been on the Democratic Party's progressive wing, championing worker health and safety, a progressive income tax, and votes for women. As Attorney General, Palmer earned a quite different reputation. Alarmed by a perceived communist threat to America, he organized the "Palmer raids," the rounding up of suspected subversives, targeting especially immigrants and labor activists. At the 1920 Democratic National Convention, Mitchell was second-highest vote-getter on the first ballot for the Presidential nomination. Mailing fold through center. Corners and edges lightly worn. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
