The addition became so popular with his audience that after 1956 he began adding a numeral after his signature to signify how many "NINAs" he had hidden in the work. He signs an original mechanical art for camera-ready set-up of a "Dick Tracy" comic strip published on Sunday, February 14, 1971 Original Art signed: "Chester/Gould," two 23x12½ sheets attached to form one 23x25 sheet. Original mechanical art for camera-ready set-up. "Dick Tracy" for Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14, 1971. Tracy thinks he has cornered the Chameleon, one of the bizarre criminals created by Gould. In the "Crimestoppers Textbook" note at top right: "st. valentine's day massacre - seven gangsters gunned down in garage 42 years ago!" Chester Gould (1900-1985) introduced crime and violence into the comics with his creation of "Dick Tracy", the first non-humorous comic strip, which debuted in the "Detroit Mirror" on October 4, 1931. Gould drew the strip, which was praised for its realism, for 46 years, two months and 21 days before retiring on Christmas Day in 1977. Dick Tracy was a modern deductive investigator who cleverly for hunted clues, fingerprints and even footprints. Gould researched police and FBI manuals and gave true accounts of detection methods, making his character as well versed as possible.

The renowned artist sends a request for a Larousse volume. Autograph Letter signed: "H. Matisse". 1 page, 6x9, Vence, December 21, 1948. Translated in full: “Dear Mr. Goldschmit / Will you please give to Mr. Gerard Matisse one of the volumes of the Larousse for which I have subscribed. I beg you to accept the expression of my distinguished sentiments.” Matisse wrote this note in December 1948 from his villa in Vence on the Riviera, to request that Gerard Matisse be presented with a “Laroussse”. The Pierre Larousse volumes, to which he refers, were a reprint of one of his major works. Horizontal crease at center, otherwise fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 31 x 21¾. French painter, sculptor, and printmaker Henri Matisse (1869-1954), who was influenced by post-Impressionism, revolted against Pointillism, and became a leader of the Fauvist school, although his later work moved in other directions. He was a master in the use of form and color to convey emotion. A lifelong friend and rival of Pablo Picasso, Matisse shared many similarities with his contemporary. However, he differed from Picasso in that Matisse usually painted from nature.

Olaf Wieghorst (1899-1988), is best known for his poignant paintings of the American West. His work graced calendars and illustrated magazines, and commanded good prices from art collectors. Many of his pieces are on display at the Olaf Wieghorst Museum in El Cajon, near San Diego. Wieghorst was a circus stunt rider in Denmark before emigrating to the US at age 19, and he appeared in two John Wayne movies.

Abraham Lincoln Life Mask copy by Leonard W. Volk. This mask measures 10 ½ high x 10 wide x 8 deep. American sculptor LEONARD VOLK (1828-1895), who studied in Rome with the help of Illinois political figure Stephen A. Douglas, opened a studio in Chicago in 1959. Closely observing Douglas and his rival, Abraham Lincoln, during their debates, he sculpted both men and did Lincoln's life mask and made casts of both of his hands. Volk's monument to Douglas stands in Chicago and statues of Douglas and Lincoln grace the state Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. The sculptor also did portrait busts of Lincoln and a number of other subjects, including Henry Clay. Fine Condition.

The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums” Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun. This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x 30½.

He painted over 300 covers for the Saturday Evening Post from 1916 to 1965 after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for Boy's Life. His art, drawn with attention to detail, had an air of simplicity and sentimentality. Rockwell's popularity grew because his art seemed to be, for everyday Americans, a mirror-image of real life. His subjects ranged from American presidents to Mark Twain characters to the man who delivered his mail.

Remington creates a remarkable pen and ink drawing of himself holding painter's palette. Original Art Signed "Yours faithfully / Frederick Remington / New Rochelle NY Aug 20 '1897" 3 ¾ x 3. Overall size of 9 ½ x 8 ¾. Not framed by the Gallery of History. Fine condition. Frederic Remington (1861-1909), a prolific Western artist, was chiefly known for his portrayals of the Old West, where he traveled extensively. His works, which usually depicted cowboys, Indians and horses, are notable for their authenticity of detail. Beginning in 1886, Remington produced more than 400 illustrations for the nation's ten leading periodicals, including "Century Magazine", in which Remington illustrated articles written by his friend, Theodore Roosevelt. Sent to Cuba in the 1890s by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, who was actively promoting war with Spain, and returning in 1898 to cover the U.S. campaign against the Spanish, Remington was appalled by war's cruelty. However, he produced a memorable sculpture, The Bronco Buster, in tribute to Teddy Roosevelt's leadership of volunteer "Rough Riders" at the Battle of San Juan Hill.

In full: "This is to confirm to you that I am interested in principle in your proposition regarding a cartoon (dessin animé) film. Before getting involved, however, I would like to see a sample of this genre of film, which we have discussed. At the same time, I would like to have a more complete technical explanation on the subject of the making of this film." Joseph Foster (1904-1971) was President of the Foster Grant Company and envisioned a series of Picasso-style cartoons. Picasso created vivid images in a variety of mediums including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and drawings. With the advancement of animation and technicolor, he was intrigued with the possibility of setting his cubist style to sound and motion. Picasso found cartoon images to be simple, yet bold in design. This belief influenced much of his later work. The creator of over 20,000 works of art, Picasso is widely considered the greatest and most influential artist of the 20th century. Yellowing in lower area at signature from mounting stains on verso.

His art reflects a great respect for the cultures and people of Central America and is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City and the Hirshborn Museum in Washington, D. To Mr. Brito Foucher, Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, regarding scaffolding that the muralist had left at the University and requesting its return. In full: "With regard to your request for information about the lumber that belongs to me and that was used in the scaffolding at the E.N. [National School] of Medicine, I provide you with the following facts and details: I. - I never had a contract with the U.N.A. It was the Committee for the Centennial Observance in the school which started the painting job in the E.N.M. II. - For that job, I did not collect anything, I only received the expenses involved in it. III. - Since I did not execute it as a result of medical problems with my eyes (I was operated on by Dr. Rafael Silva), I returned the advance I had received for expenses in its entirety to Dr. Ignacio Chavez, with whom I dealt concerning the mural. Dr. Chavez can testify to this; there is a card in the Ex-rector de la Cueva's possession from Dr.…"

Audubon signs an 1844 receipt acknowledging payment for volumes of his works. Receipt signed: "John J Audubon", 8x5. New York, 1844 September 28. In full: "To James Munroe Esqr., For Nos: 98, 99 & 100, "Birds of America" $3.--, For Nos: 6 & 7, Quadrupeds of America 20.--, (total) $23.--, New York Septr 28. 1844. Recd - Payment". When ornithological pioneer, John James Audubon signed this receipt for his books in 1844, he was diligently working on what would be his last project: Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, plates in two volumes (1842-1845), text in three volumes (1846-1954). He was assisted by his sons and Reverend John Bachman (1790-1874), a naturalist and associate of Audubon's since 1831. His previous publication, Birds of America (1826-1838), in four volumes, each copy costing $1,000, was done from his watercolors by a London engraver who had engraved the copper plates, impressed them on paper and hand colored them. Audubon had searched for an American publisher for his works, but unable to fine one, due to the publishing price of $100,000, he had gone abroad. Audubon's fantastic and minutely detailed paintings portrayed 1,065 life-sized birds in natural poses and in their natural habitat.

He painted over 300 covers for the "Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the Post, Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 28¾ x 25½.
