Painter, sculptor, and author Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was a social satire artist. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, commissioned by Playboy, and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. His publications include Charles Bragg on Medicine (1984), Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective (1999), and Asylum Earth (2013). Minor scuffing at canvas edges, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by typed letter from actor Red Buttons referencing director Frank Capra's admiration for the work. . Extremely rare Partly Printed DS: "Frank Lloyd Wright Architect", 1p, 5½x8½. No date, no place. An application for information to be published in a directory. Headed: "Business or Professional Record". In the upper portion, which asks for "data to enable the editor to do complete justice to your business or professional record", Wright has written, in full: "Work characterized as 'New School of Middle West' in America -- Abroad, as the architecture of the 'Prairie Dimension' -- the only truly American expression in the art of Architecture. Many foreign publications of distinction publish the work and European architects manifest increasing interest in it." Wright has also written "None" twice in columns asking for information on being an officer or director of a corporation and the office or position occupied. At the bottom of the form is a line that reads "Please enclose your business card or other printed matter in order that spelling of names may be verified." Beneath it, Wright has added "(Never had one!)".

Peter Max, born in Berlin in 1937, spent most of his first ten years in Shanghai, and then traveled the world with his parents before immigrating to the US in 1953. Already an award-winning graphic artist and designer, Max burst on the cultural scene in the 1960s, first with his "psychedelic art" and then with a new concept, "cosmic art." Max, who works in many mediums, has been the official artist for the Grammy Awards, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Woodstock Music Festival and 5 Super Bowls. He has decorated a Boeing 747, a Dale Earnhardt racecar, and 265 murals on the US border. He has designed popular US and UN stamps, painted five US Presidents, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the Dalai Lama. He painted individual portraits of 356 firefighters who lost their lives heroically on 9/11, presenting these portraits to the families, and then at President Bush's request designed 356 more for the firefighters' memorial.

Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), a leader among the Impressionists, is best known for his landscapes and paintings of figures and flowers. Renoir, who also enjoyed painting his children, also painted Claude, the youngest of his three sons (born in 1901 when the artist was 60), at his easel (1907) and dressed in a clown costume (1909). Deep-relief bust rendering of George Washington's head from an original cast by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who created the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Produced to help finance construction of the "shrine of democracy", this model displays Borglum's vision and craftsmanship, and was personally signed by him. Original art signed "Gutzon Borglum/Rushmore" on verso. 4¼x5x2 sculpture mounted on 8x9¼x¼ brown velvet-covered wood board. This is a deep-relief rendering of George Washington's head, from a mold made by the sculptor who created the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Executed before the monument itself, this model reflects Borglum's design in its planning stage. Though a small piece, it is filled with subtle details that breathe life and humanity - and dignity - into its subject. This patriotic piece of Americana is a fine exhibition of Borglum's skills. John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum (1867-1941), born in St. Charles, Idaho, already famous for creating the great head of Lincoln in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, was commissioned to begin work on a "shrine of democracy" in 1927.

The painter signs a richly detailed, 4-page handwritten letter to his wife Julie (1892), discussing business and family affairs, and expressing frustration at mail delays Autograph Letter signed: "C. Pissarro", 4 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. Eragny (France), 1892 December 27. To"My dear Julie". In French, translated in full: "One cannot rely on the punctuality of the mail these days; would you believe that your letter to Lise only arrived here yesterday, thus too late to be communicated in time; I hope that you were nevertheless on time at your aunt's. Something else even more extraordinary, I received yesterday the letter that you sent to Lucien on Saturday, the imbeciles at the Hotel who know my name, even though Lucien is staying with them, still sent the letter to me; I thought it would be useless to send it back because it would have come back to me, and besides it was too late. The 2 p.m. train just came by, nobody. Lucien wrote that he would perhaps miss it and would be on the 3:45. I enclose herewith a letter from Mrs. Mirbeau that must be answered. Peissier writes to me that the notary in Chaumont agrees to smaller fees and will have Edoline sign a promise to receive the six thousand francs in three months or perhaps in one month.…"

Saturday Evening Post illustrator Norman Rockwell drew an original blue ink picture of a dog on this typed letter, which he signed in 1970. Interestingly, this letter, on his personalized stationery, is an apology that he can't send the recipient a sketch or drawing! With original mailing envelope. Original art on typed letter signed "Norman/Rockwell" in blue ink. 1 page, 6x7¾, on Rockwell's personalized stationery. With 4¾x1½ blue ink drawing near bottom edge. March 10, 1970. In full: "Dear Lachie MacLachlan: Thank you for your letter and for all the nice things you said about my paintings. I am really sorry but I just don't have any sketches or drawings that I could send you, so I am returning your check. Again, than you for your interest in writing to me. Cordially,". Lightly toned and creased. Paper clip impressions near top and bottom edges, which touch drawing but not signature. Light ink smudges in body of letter. Rust stain near bottom edge. Lightly discolored on verso (no show-through). Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope from Rockwell's personalized stationery. 6¼x4. Postmarked Stockbridge, Massachusetts, March 11, 1970. Addressed Mr. Lachie MacLachlan, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The renowned artist sends a request for a Larousse volume. Autograph Letter signed: "H. Matisse". 1 page, 6x9, Vence, December 21, 1948. Translated in full: “Dear Mr. Goldschmit / Will you please give to Mr. Gerard Matisse one of the volumes of the Larousse for which I have subscribed. I beg you to accept the expression of my distinguished sentiments.” Matisse wrote this note in December 1948 from his villa in Vence on the Riviera, to request that Gerard Matisse be presented with a “Laroussse”. The Pierre Larousse volumes, to which he refers, were a reprint of one of his major works. Horizontal crease at center, otherwise fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 31 x 21¾. French painter, sculptor, and printmaker Henri Matisse (1869-1954), who was influenced by post-Impressionism, revolted against Pointillism, and became a leader of the Fauvist school, although his later work moved in other directions. He was a master in the use of form and color to convey emotion. A lifelong friend and rival of Pablo Picasso, Matisse shared many similarities with his contemporary. However, he differed from Picasso in that Matisse usually painted from nature.

The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums” Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun. This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x 30½.

Remarkable signed, handwritten letter to a friend, describing his Florida vacation plans in very vivid detail. Remington has included a drawing of himself sketching an alligator. ALS: "Frederic R", 1 page, 7x8¾. No date, no place, but Florida. To unnamed correspondent. Begins: "Dear One". In full: "That's better than I expected - I have had the grip and been d-- sick - I have got catarrel [sic, catarrhal] to beat hell - I am going to die or take the old lady and pull for  the palmetos _ which I do on Florida Special tomorrow - how long? The length is decided by how my money holds out - that's the motive -- Three weeks if I like it -- a year if you will come and bring Madam. Going to take a shot-gun and I am going in for sport. No d-- high diddle diddle in a big cave full of niggers and dudes. -- Clear shooting and I want to feel a big tarpon pull. Going Jacksonville - Tampa -- & think far south -- Will write you -- but its too good to think you will come -- If you did -- me boy we would have some fun -- Got sketching kit want to shoot alligator. -- want to draw nigger -- want rest and good old fashioned loaf.…"

Signed autograph letter to a biographer concerning photographic plates missing from his collection Autograph Letter signed: "Alfred Stieglitz", 2 pages, 8½x11, front and verso (hinged to show both sides). New York City, 1933 December 18. To his friend (and author) Grace E. Titus, who was working a book about the innovative photographer. In full, as written: "Every number of Camera Work was published complete when issued. The way it happens that Plates are missing is that frequently Camera Work came out of the Bindery with Plates to be inserted by me personally after binding. Some years ago many of the Insets were either destroyed or mislaid. Hence the impossibility of completing many issues at present I know of no way of acquiring missing plates except in keeping one's eyes open for numbers of Camera Work as they may appear in the market Absolutely complete sets of Camera Work are very, very rare & are priceless. No I have no reproductions either There are none The Plates in Camera Work for the major part are photo gravures made directly from original negatives & were made under my direction as were the prints. -So from a certain point of view many of the Plates might be looked upon as a species of originals".

In full: "The letter which I received in Rome, your letter, is very useful to give me joy, and to appease my worries. I know thus that the bust has arrived with Miss Greysby, who took it and conducted it with the greatest care. Miss Greysby was a member of the committee of the exhibition at the Duke of Westminster's, and never lost sight of it, when I was away for one month. It is a permission of Providence, that this bust carried to London to His Grace the duke, it was protected by the Museum of the Queen; Kensington where it was exhibited, among the works that I had given to England, until the day it left the bust at Kensington, has been regarded by the artists and the writers. At the Duke's residence a month before, it was in the approbation of Her Majesty the Queen, the Queen Alexandra and the dowager Queen of Russia. They have been benevolent graces for the bust and for my sculptures. Thus your letter has gratified me. Your solicitude so great in Paris so that, the bust of your dear and illustrious husband, be also to your liking, to your memory, had perfectly succeeded.…"
