Sepia, 4¼x6½ overall, 4x5¼ image, (two surfaces). Signed beneath image and above the imprint: "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1882, by/C. M. BELL,/in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D.C." Imprinted on verso: "Notice - The negative from which this photograph is taken was made personally by me in the jail in the city of Washington on February 6th, 1882, for Charles Guiteau, and I warn all persons not to infringe upon the copyright. C.M. Bell". Lawyer, Charles Guiteau (1844-1882), unsuccessful in a small legal firm in Chicago, had moved to New York. Unable to find work on a newspaper, Guiteau unhappily returned to the practice of law. Divorced by his wife soon thereafter, Guiteau, despondent and struggling financially, involved himself in the 1880 Presidential campaign, writing a speech on behalf of James Garfield which the Republic Party published and gave some limited circulation. read more...

JAMES DEAN Inscribed and signed 14x11 lobby card for East of Eden Lobby Card inscribed and signed: "To Bob with all my best wishes - James Dean". Color, 14x11. Shown with Julie Harris in a scene from the film. James Dean (1931-1955) portrayed alienated, anti-establishment youth in East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (released in 1955 shortly after his death) and Giant (1956), receiving Academy Award nominations for East of Eden and Giant. A motorcycle enthusiast like his hero, Marlon Brando, Dean purchased a Triumph 500cc TR5 Trophy model bike after seeing Brando ride a similar model, and wear a similar hat, in The Wild One (1954).  Dean was only 24 when he was killed in an automobile accident on September 30, 1955. His final day on the Giant set was just two weeks earlier. Edges chipped and torn with tape repairs on verso at all edges. Tack holes at all corners and margins. Stained and toned. FRANK JAMES The brother of Jesse James pens this letter to this wife while awaiting trial for murder and armed robbery, signing with his outlaw alias, "Ben". Very rare! Autograph Letter Signed: "Ben" in black ink, 1p, 5x8. Castle St. James in Gallatin, Missouri, 1883 July 13. To "My dear Wife". In full: "I just this moment received your letter as I have also one from Allen which explains itself. Write them as I have just done. May God watch over and protect you and our dear little boy are my earnest prayers. I will write Monday again./ Your true husband". Frank James (1843-1915) and his brother Jesse James fought as Confederate guerrillas in Missouri ("Quantrill's Raiders"), and in the pro-Southern state militia during the Civil War. They joined Cole Younger and others in 1866 to form a gang led by Jesse, robbing banks and trains. Frank and Jesse survived and escaped the failed Northfield, Minnesota bank heist of 1876, forming a new gang. Several months after the murder of his brother Jesse on April 3, 1882, Frank James traveled to Jefferson City and surrendered to Missouri Governor Thomas Crittenden. read more...

COLE YOUNGER Writing from prison in Stillwater, Minnesota, the outlaw thanks a state senator for a speech advocating his release. Autograph Letter signed twice: "Cole Younger", 2 pages, 7½x12¼. Stillwater, Minnesota, 1899 March 26. Signed on both pages. To "Hon. M. G. Daly, Senate Chambers, St Paul, Minnesota". In full (spelling errors in original): "Mrs. McNeil, Mrs. Greene and Hon. G. H. Schurmer was here to day. Wish I could repeat all they said in regard to the speech you made in the Senate in favor of the Wilson Bill. I had read what little the papers give and felt very grateful. But if posable I would feel still more after hearing them speak so highly. They were wishing I could have herd you. I told them I would feel very happy as it was if you could only here them praising you. They said everone said it was one of the best speeches made in the Senate during the session. WALTON On this extremely rare document, western lawman Pat Garrett signed this typed document in 1896 to become a deputy clerk of the Third Judicial District Court. This was signed 20 days before he was appointed sheriff of Doña Ana County, New Mexico. Items signed by Garrett are extremely rare and highly desirable! Document signed "P. H. Garrett" and by "W. B. Walton" as Clerk and "H. B. Holt" as Deputy. Pencil notations at top edge and black ink notations on verso, all in unknown hand. 7¾x6½, with 1¾-inch embossed seal in bottom right corner . July 20, 1896. Document in full: "I, the undersigned, do hereby solemnly swear that I will well and faithfully perform the duties of Deputy Clerk of the Third Judicial District Court, So Help me God." MUSSOLINI INSCRIBED A PHOTOGRAPH TO MARY PICKFORD!   BENITO MUSSOLINI. Large Photograph Mount inscribed and signed: "Alla Signora Mary Pikford/cordialmente/Roma 10 maggio 1926 Mussolini" in Italian. B/w, 15x22 overall, image 9½x15 (two surfaces). Photograph by V. Lavoisa, Roma. Water staining on "cordialmente" and "maggio" does not affect the inscription, just stains the surface it's written on. Mussolini is known to have been a fan of Mary Pickford which he has spelled "Pikford". According to Eileen Whitfield in Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood (1997), Pickford praised both Mussolini and Hitler. In the 1998 DVD Mary Pickford: A Life on Film, the filmmakers briefly mention Pickford's "momentary flirtation" with Mussolini's fascism. In 1923, Mussolini appeared in Samuel Goldwyn's film, The Eternal City. BENITO MUSSOLINI was Prime Minister of Italy from October 31, 1922 when he was asked by King Victor Emmanuel III to form a government, until July 25, 1943 when he was deposed. read more...

FRANK JAMES Awaiting his second trial in a year, the famous outlaw writes a loving letter to his 7 year old son Robert ("My Dear Little Man") Autograph Letter signed: "Your Father/Frank James" in pencil, 1 pages, 5½x8½. No place, 1884 February 29. Written in block letters to "My Dear Little Man", in full: "I want you to hurry up and learn to ride so you can get you a new saddle. I want you to learn to write and write me a letter. Addressed in verso to "Robert F. James/at home". This letter was enclosed with a letter James wrote to his wife Annie. Accompanied by printed chart titled "The Deaf and Dumb Alphabet", showing the appropriate hand signals. Notation in Frank James' hand: "For Rob". PAT GARRETT While traveling New Orleans in hopes of escaping his tainted reputation as the infamous killer of Billy the Kid, a somber Pat Garrett writes to his wife, "I am so lonesome and blue I wish I had not let you leave me."
