The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums” Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun. This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x 30½.

In a handwritten letter to a friend in Paris, Cassatt explains that her art keeps her too busy to reply to most letters, but that she would welcome a visit in the Spring. ALS: "Mary Cassatt", 6 pages, 5¼x7, front and verso. Mesnil-Beaufresne, Mesnil-Theribus (Oise), France, no date. On imprinted stationery to Miss Mary Gardner Swift. Begins: "My Dear Mary". In full: "Of course I had your letter but I never thought of answering it. If you knew what my life was you would [five words illegible] than in the [illegible] If you would love to write to me anything that you think I would I shall always be glad to know [two words illegible] I am a very busy woman. Most of my correspondence is done in French through my [illegible] Is French, she has been with us 43 years Ever since my Mothers (sic) death thirty years ago I have been alone, carrying on this place & working here. Ah my art. Of course I have been better known as an artist in France [illegible] is a member of the family In the meantime I send you my kindest regards & hope that next Spring if I am well enough you will come out and see me I had my three nephews and one niece here this last summer. JOHN JAMES AUDUBON - RECEIPT SIGNED 09/28/1844 - HFSID: 350484

Audubon signs an 1844 receipt acknowledging payment for volumes of his works. Receipt signed: "John J Audubon", 8x5. New York, 1844 September 28. In full: "To James Munroe Esqr., For Nos: 98, 99 & 100, "Birds of America" $3.--, For Nos: 6 & 7, Quadrupeds of America 20.--, (total) $23.--, New York Septr 28. 1844. Recd - Payment". When ornithological pioneer, John James Audubon signed this receipt for his books in 1844, he was diligently working on what would be his last project: Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, plates in two volumes (1842-1845), text in three volumes (1846-1954). He was assisted by his sons and Reverend John Bachman (1790-1874), a naturalist and associate of Audubon's since 1831. His previous publication, Birds of America (1826-1838), in four volumes, each copy costing $1,000, was done from his watercolors by a London engraver who had engraved the copper plates, impressed them on paper and hand colored them. Audubon had searched for an American publisher for his works, but unable to fine one, due to the publishing price of $100,000, he had gone abroad. Audubon's fantastic and minutely detailed paintings portrayed 1,065 life-sized birds in natural poses and in their natural habitat.

Saturday Evening Post illustrator Norman Rockwell drew an original blue ink picture of a dog on this typed letter, which he signed in 1970. Interestingly, this letter, on his personalized stationery, is an apology that he can't send the recipient a sketch or drawing! With original mailing envelope. Original art on typed letter signed "Norman/Rockwell" in blue ink. 1 page, 6x7¾, on Rockwell's personalized stationery. With 4¾x1½ blue ink drawing near bottom edge. March 10, 1970. In full: "Dear Lachie MacLachlan: Thank you for your letter and for all the nice things you said about my paintings. I am really sorry but I just don't have any sketches or drawings that I could send you, so I am returning your check. Again, than you for your interest in writing to me. Cordially,". Lightly toned and creased. Paper clip impressions near top and bottom edges, which touch drawing but not signature. Light ink smudges in body of letter. Rust stain near bottom edge. Lightly discolored on verso (no show-through). Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope from Rockwell's personalized stationery. 6¼x4. Postmarked Stockbridge, Massachusetts, March 11, 1970. Addressed Mr. Lachie MacLachlan, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
