Deep-relief bust rendering of George Washington's head from an original cast by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who created the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Produced to help finance construction of the "shrine of democracy", this model displays Borglum's vision and craftsmanship, and was personally signed by him. Original art signed "Gutzon Borglum/Rushmore" on verso. 4¼x5x2 plaster sculpture mounted on 8x9¼x¼ brown velvet-covered wood board. This is a deep-relief rendering of George Washington's head, from a mold made by the sculptor who created the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Executed before the monument itself, this model reflects Borglum's design in its planning stage. Though a small piece, it is filled with subtle details that breathe life and humanity - and dignity - into its subject. This patriotic piece of Americana is a fine exhibition of Borglum's skills. John Gutzon de la Mothe  Borglum (1867-1941), born in St. Charles, Idaho, already famous for creating the great head of Lincoln in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, was commissioned to begin work on a "shrine of democracy" in 1927.

Costa Rican-born artist Zúñiga (1912-1998) was primarily a painter up until 1936, when he moved to Mexico and became an important figure in Mexico's political moderne style, with his life-sized stone and bronze sculptures of indigenous women with big proportions and tightly wrapped shawls. His art reflects a great respect for the cultures and people of Central America and is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City and the Hirshborn Museum in Washington, D. C., among others.

Peter Max, born in Berlin in 1937, spent most of his first ten years in Shanghai, and then traveled the world with his parents before immigrating to the US in 1953. Already an award-winning graphic artist and designer, Max burst on the cultural scene in the 1960s, first with his "psychedelic art" and then with a new concept, "cosmic art." Max, who works in many mediums, has been the official artist for the Grammy Awards, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Woodstock Music Festival and 5 Super Bowls. He has decorated a Boeing 747, a Dale Earnhardt racecar, and 265 murals on the US border. He has designed popular US and UN stamps, painted five US Presidents, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the Dalai Lama. He painted individual portraits of 356 firefighters who lost their lives heroically on 9/11, presenting these portraits to the families, and then at President Bush's request designed 356 more for the firefighters' memorial.

But its a good photo. - I see there are the G-darndest plagues going in in Hong Kong - Foo-Chin - Ko-so - Fol-hi and other Chinese settlements on the coast that it aint safe this side of the Big Correl fence - I think any man who will go to China would go to Hell for a Pastime. Did you give Willie Bull-calf a good send off? After it published I wont dare go down - some their skinned glad - will push a new kind of edged tool into my mid-riff cause he think I wrote it. Lots of moon-gazers think I write all the letter press that goes with my pictures. I [two words illegible] lots think you also are a drawer I am now pleading with the Cos - tan to get Clark's M.S.…"

Bronze sculpture by the artist, titled "Court of Appeals", 17/275. Bronze sculpture, 9½ inches wide, 7¾ inches long, 16 inches high. Circa 1988. Titled "Court of Appeals". Painter, sculptor, and author Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was a social satire artist. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, commissioned by Playboy, and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. His publications include Charles Bragg on Medicine (1984), Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective (1999), and Asylum Earth (2013). Excellent condition.

1812 indenture renting land in Philadelphia owned by Mary Penn, signed by the prolific Peale family member as a witness. Extremely rare signature from the artist! Indenture signed "Rubens Peale" as a witness. Also signed by Mary Penn through her attorney "Thos. Cadwalader" in lower right corner. 2 pages, 21½x14¼ (front and verso). Aug. 1, 1812. This indenture rents an 11-acre-and-100-perches lot of land in Philadelphia to John Craige for eight silver dollars a year. In return, Craige had to erect a brick or stone house on the property worth at least $1,333.34 within two years. American artist Rubens Peale (1784-1865) was one of the children of artist-naturalist Charles Willson Peale. Born with poor eyesight, Peale wouldn't follow his siblings into an art career until much later in life. He became manager and then administrative proprietor of the Peale family's museum of art and science in Philadelphia and began his own museum in New York City in 1825. It was after his retirement from museum directing that Peale began painting, using still life painting as an extension of his interest in natural history. However, his painting career was short lived as he passed 10 years later in 1865, leaving most of his artwork and paintings extremely rare.

The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums” Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun. This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x 30½.

Limited edition lithograph of the artist's work titled "At the Barber" # 1/200 Limited-edition Lithograph signed: "Norman/Rockwell". 1/200, 19 x 30¼ visible. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) captured scenes from American life in his magazine covers and illustrations, often noted for their humorous and accurate depictions of 1940's and 1950's life. Rockwell's drawings, however, were skillfully executed with minute attention to detail and were so realistic that they usually resembled photographs rather than paintings. He painted over 300 covers for the "Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the Post, Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled at lower blank margin. Worn at left edge. Fine condition. Ten months after being dismissed from teaching for using a male model in a women's drawing class, the artist signed this handwritten letter explaining that requests for instructional casts must be addressed to the director who fired him Autograph Letter Signed: "Thomas Eakins", 1¾ pages, 4½x8. Philadelphia, 1886 December 7. To Mr. Frank M. Cowles. The letter is placed on a smaller frame with a hinge, allowing for a plaque featuring the letter's full message in a plaque behind it. In Full: "Those casts of which you speak were made from my dissections at the Pennsylvania Acad. Of the Fine Arts while I was a professor there. I am no longer connected with the institution, so I would advise you to address Mr. Edward H. Coates who is chairman of the committee on Instruction. His address is 116 Chestnut St. Philadelphia. The old arrangement was that they should be furnished to any art student or art institution at cost price which varies somewhat. My remembrance is that the whole set came to about 11 or 12 dollars. My delay in answering your note was caused by a seeming possibility that I should have seen Mr. Coates myself, which however I did not find time to do.…"

The painter signs a richly detailed, 4-page handwritten letter to his wife Julie (1892), discussing business and family affairs, and expressing frustration at mail delays Autograph Letter signed: "C. Pissarro", 4 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. Eragny (France), 1892 December 27. To"My dear Julie". In French, translated in full: "One cannot rely on the punctuality of the mail these days; would you believe that your letter to Lise only arrived here yesterday, thus too late to be communicated in time; I hope that you were nevertheless on time at your aunt's. Something else even more extraordinary, I received yesterday the letter that you sent to Lucien on Saturday, the imbeciles at the Hotel who know my name, even though Lucien is staying with them, still sent the letter to me; I thought it would be useless to send it back because it would have come back to me, and besides it was too late. The 2 p.m. train just came by, nobody. Lucien wrote that he would perhaps miss it and would be on the 3:45. I enclose herewith a letter from Mrs. Mirbeau that must be answered. Peissier writes to me that the notary in Chaumont agrees to smaller fees and will have Edoline sign a promise to receive the six thousand francs in three months or perhaps in one month.…"

In a handwritten letter to a friend in Paris, Cassatt explains that her art keeps her too busy to reply to most letters, but that she would welcome a visit in the Spring. ALS: "Mary Cassatt", 6 pages, 5¼x7, front and verso. Mesnil-Beaufresne, Mesnil-Theribus (Oise), France, no date. On imprinted stationery to Miss Mary Gardner Swift. Begins: "My Dear Mary". In full: "Of course I had your letter but I never thought of answering it. If you knew what my life was you would [five words illegible] than in the [illegible] If you would love to write to me anything that you think I would I shall always be glad to know [two words illegible] I am a very busy woman. Most of my correspondence is done in French through my [illegible] Is French, she has been with us 43 years Ever since my Mothers (sic) death thirty years ago I have been alone, carrying on this place & working here. Ah my art. Of course I have been better known as an artist in France [illegible] is a member of the family In the meantime I send you my kindest regards & hope that next Spring if I am well enough you will come out and see me I had my three nephews and one niece here this last summer. Ellen Mary has a daughter born Sept 9th.…"

Signed autograph letter to a biographer concerning photographic plates missing from his collection Autograph Letter signed: "Alfred Stieglitz", 2 pages, 8½x11, front and verso (hinged to show both sides). New York City, 1933 December 18. To his friend (and author) Grace E. Titus, who was working a book about the innovative photographer. In full, as written: "Every number of Camera Work was published complete when issued. The way it happens that Plates are missing is that frequently Camera Work came out of the Bindery with Plates to be inserted by me personally after binding. Some years ago many of the Insets were either destroyed or mislaid. Hence the impossibility of completing many issues at present I know of no way of acquiring missing plates except in keeping one's eyes open for numbers of Camera Work as they may appear in the market Absolutely complete sets of Camera Work are very, very rare & are priceless. No I have no reproductions either There are none The Plates in Camera Work for the major part are photo gravures made directly from original negatives & were made under my direction as were the prints. -So from a certain point of view many of the Plates might be looked upon as a species of originals".
