Painter, sculptor, and author Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was a social satire artist. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, commissioned by Playboy, and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. His publications include Charles Bragg on Medicine (1984), Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective (1999), and Asylum Earth (2013). Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 50½ x 38¼.

In a handwritten letter to a friend in Paris, Cassatt explains that her art keeps her too busy to reply to most letters, but that she would welcome a visit in the Spring. ALS: "Mary Cassatt", 6 pages, 5¼x7, front and verso. Mesnil-Beaufresne, Mesnil-Theribus (Oise), France, no date. On imprinted stationery to Miss Mary Gardner Swift. Begins: "My Dear Mary". In full: "Of course I had your letter but I never thought of answering it. If you knew what my life was you would [five words illegible] than in the [illegible] If you would love to write to me anything that you think I would I shall always be glad to know [two words illegible] I am a very busy woman. Most of my correspondence is done in French through my [illegible] Is French, she has been with us 43 years Ever since my Mothers (sic) death thirty years ago I have been alone, carrying on this place & working here. Ah my art. Of course I have been better known as an artist in France [illegible] is a member of the family In the meantime I send you my kindest regards & hope that next Spring if I am well enough you will come out and see me I had my three nephews and one niece here this last summer. Ellen Mary has a daughter born Sept 9th.…"

. Extremely rare Partly Printed DS: "Frank Lloyd Wright Architect", 1p, 5½x8½. No date, no place. An application for information to be published in a directory. Headed: "Business or Professional Record". In the upper portion, which asks for "data to enable the editor to do complete justice to your business or professional record", Wright has written, in full: "Work characterized as 'New School of Middle West' in America -- Abroad, as the architecture of the 'Prairie Dimension' -- the only truly American expression in the art of Architecture. Many foreign publications of distinction publish the work and European architects manifest increasing interest in it." Wright has also written "None" twice in columns asking for information on being an officer or director of a corporation and the office or position occupied. At the bottom of the form is a line that reads "Please enclose your business card or other printed matter in order that spelling of names may be verified." Beneath it, Wright has added "(Never had one!)".

Saturday Evening Post illustrator Norman Rockwell drew an original blue ink picture of a dog on this typed letter, which he signed in 1970. Interestingly, this letter, on his personalized stationery, is an apology that he can't send the recipient a sketch or drawing! With original mailing envelope. Original art on typed letter signed "Norman/Rockwell" in blue ink. 1 page, 6x7¾, on Rockwell's personalized stationery. With 4¾x1½ blue ink drawing near bottom edge. March 10, 1970. In full: "Dear Lachie MacLachlan: Thank you for your letter and for all the nice things you said about my paintings. I am really sorry but I just don't have any sketches or drawings that I could send you, so I am returning your check. Again, than you for your interest in writing to me. Cordially,". Lightly toned and creased. Paper clip impressions near top and bottom edges, which touch drawing but not signature. Light ink smudges in body of letter. Rust stain near bottom edge. Lightly discolored on verso (no show-through). Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope from Rockwell's personalized stationery. 6¼x4. Postmarked Stockbridge, Massachusetts, March 11, 1970. Addressed Mr. Lachie MacLachlan, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The painter sketches images of his eight-year-old daughter “dressing up” in a bustle and comments on his art and that of his son Lucien. Autograph Letter signed: "C. Pissarro", 1 page (front and verso), 10x8 which folds to 5x8. Pissarro writes from his home in Eragny to his niece in England of family matters and of his art. Specifically, he thanks her for sending his children clothing and draws two humorous sketches of Cocotte, his eight-year-old daughter, wearing a bustle from a front and side view. He also writes of the completion of his drawings created in the town of Rouen, a favorite locale of impressionist artists. His son Lucien was in Paris at the time of this letter, and he helped his father prepare for art shows from there. Pissarro states that he is forwarding his drawings from Rouen as well as an etching done by Lucien. Like a proud father, he continues to talk about Lucien's work specifically on a children's book which was giving the boy trouble when it came to drawing the animals and father jokes of the final product: "...it will be ready in 2 or 3 days.…"

Carl Anderson, Rube Goldberg, Dick Moores, Jerry Scott, Otto Soglow, Pat Sullivan, and Russ Westover sign and draw their own cartons. Comprises: (1) DICK MOORES. Cartoon signed: "Dick Moores". B/w, 5x6¾. Dick Moores (1909-1986), a former assistant to Chester Gould on "Dick Tracy" and a Disney animator, is best known for working with Frank King on "Gasoline Alley", which Moores took over upon King's death in 1969. Fine condition. (2) RUBE GOLDBERG. Original Art inscribed and signed: "Love to/Jane Ann/Bodenheimer/from/Boob McNutt,/Mike & Ike/Pearl &/Bertha/Rube Goldberg./Aug./1934". B/w, 6x7¾. Rube Goldberg (1883-1970), who is also known for his complicated contrivances, has drawn the characters from "Boob McNutt", which he introduced in 1915, on letterhead of The Balsams, Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. Horizontal fold touches characters, light horizontal crease at 2 letters of characters' names. Fine condition. (3) CARL ANDERSON. Original Art signed: "Carl/Anderson". B/w, 4x5¼. Pen and ink drawing of Carl Anderson's (1865-1948) comic strip character Henry, who was picked up by King Features Syndicate in 1934. Mid-horizontal fold at blank area. Fine condition.

Deep-relief bust rendering of George Washington's head from an original cast by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who created the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Produced to help finance construction of the "shrine of democracy", this model displays Borglum's vision and craftsmanship, and was personally signed by him. Original art signed "Gutzon Borglum/Rushmore" on verso. 4¼x5x2 sculpture mounted on 8x9¼x¼ brown velvet-covered wood board. This is a deep-relief rendering of George Washington's head, from a mold made by the sculptor who created the Mount Rushmore National Monument. Executed before the monument itself, this model reflects Borglum's design in its planning stage. Though a small piece, it is filled with subtle details that breathe life and humanity - and dignity - into its subject. This patriotic piece of Americana is a fine exhibition of Borglum's skills. John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum (1867-1941), born in St. Charles, Idaho, already famous for creating the great head of Lincoln in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, was commissioned to begin work on a "shrine of democracy" in 1927.

Matisse signs a typed New Year's greeting for 1953 on verso of this 6x4 printed version of his self-referential painting, The Painter and His Model Printed Art signed in Ink: "H. Matisse" on verso, 6x4. His typed note in French above his signature, translated in full: "My thanks and my best/ wishes for 1953". The printed card features a reproduction of his painting, The Painter and His Model, from the Museum of Modern Art, Paris. A short version of the title, simply The Painter, is printed on this card. French painter, sculptor, and printmaker Henri Matisse (1869-1954), who was influenced by Post-Impressionism, revolted against Pointillism and became a leader of the Fauvist school, although his later work moved in other directions. He was a master in the use of form and color to convey emotion. A lifelong friend and rival of Pablo Picasso, Matisse shared many similarities with his contemporary. However, he differed from Picasso in that Matisse usually painted from nature. In The Painter and His Model (1917) Matisse also depicts himself in his Paris studio painting in another well-known work, Laurette in a Green Robe (1916). Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.

Peter Max, born in Berlin in 1937, spent most of his first ten years in Shanghai, and then traveled the world with his parents before immigrating to the US in 1953. Already an award-winning graphic artist and designer, Max burst on the cultural scene in the 1960s, first with his "psychedelic art" and then with a new concept, "cosmic art." Max, who works in many mediums, has been the official artist for the Grammy Awards, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Woodstock Music Festival and 5 Super Bowls. He has decorated a Boeing 747, a Dale Earnhardt racecar, and 265 murals on the US border. He has designed popular US and UN stamps, painted five US Presidents, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the Dalai Lama. He painted individual portraits of 356 firefighters who lost their lives heroically on 9/11, presenting these portraits to the families, and then at President Bush's request designed 356 more for the firefighters' memorial.

Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), a leader among the Impressionists, is best known for his landscapes and paintings of figures and flowers. Renoir, who also enjoyed painting his children, also painted Claude, the youngest of his three sons (born in 1901 when the artist was 60), at his easel (1907) and dressed in a clown costume (1909). Dry mounted. Edges slightly soiled. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition. Mounted by unknown individual. Not reviewed by us for conservation integrity. Remarkable signed, handwritten letter to a friend, describing his Florida vacation plans in very vivid detail. Remington has included a drawing of himself sketching an alligator. ALS: "Frederic R", 1 page, 7x8¾. No date, no place, but Florida. To unnamed correspondent. Begins: "Dear One". In full: "That's better than I expected - I have had the grip and been d-- sick - I have got catarrel [sic, catarrhal] to beat hell - I am going to die or take the old lady and pull for  the palmetos _ which I do on Florida Special tomorrow - how long? The length is decided by how my money holds out - that's the motive -- Three weeks if I like it -- a year if you will come and bring Madam. Going to take a shot-gun and I am going in for sport. No d-- high diddle diddle in a big cave full of niggers and dudes. -- Clear shooting and I want to feel a big tarpon pull. Going Jacksonville - Tampa -- & think far south -- Will write you -- but its too good to think you will come -- If you did -- me boy we would have some fun -- Got sketching kit want to shoot alligator. -- want to draw nigger -- want rest and good old fashioned loaf.…"

The artist signs an image of his plaster statue depicting his lover, Camille Claudel. Postcard Photograph signed: "Rodin". Sepia, 4 x 5½ overall, image 4 x 4¾ (one surface). This signed image of Rodin's plaster statue of his lover, Camille Claudel, is titled: L'Adieu (The Farewell) (1892). His young protégé suffered a mental breakdown in 1898 and was later hospitalized. Rodin's classic realism in sculpture was generally devoted to the sensuality of the human body seen in such works as The Thinker (1880) and The Kiss (1886). Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 23 x 16¼. Frame exhibits wearing at corners.
