The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums” Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun. This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x 30½.

Bronze sculpture by the artist, titled "Court of Appeals", 17/275. Bronze sculpture, 9½ inches wide, 7¾ inches long, 16 inches high. Circa 1988. Titled "Court of Appeals". Painter, sculptor, and author Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was a social satire artist. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, commissioned by Playboy, and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. His publications include Charles Bragg on Medicine (1984), Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective (1999), and Asylum Earth (2013). Excellent condition.

Ten months after being dismissed from teaching for using a male model in a women's drawing class, the artist signed this handwritten letter explaining that requests for instructional casts must be addressed to the director who fired him Autograph Letter Signed: "Thomas Eakins", 1¾ pages, 4½x8. Philadelphia, 1886 December 7. To Mr. Frank M. Cowles. The letter is placed on a smaller frame with a hinge, allowing for a plaque featuring the letter's full message in a plaque behind it. In Full: "Those casts of which you speak were made from my dissections at the Pennsylvania Acad. Of the Fine Arts while I was a professor there. I am no longer connected with the institution, so I would advise you to address Mr. Edward H. Coates who is chairman of the committee on Instruction. His address is 116 Chestnut St. Philadelphia. The old arrangement was that they should be furnished to any art student or art institution at cost price which varies somewhat. My remembrance is that the whole set came to about 11 or 12 dollars. My delay in answering your note was caused by a seeming possibility that I should have seen Mr. Coates myself, which however I did not find time to do.…"

The renowned artist sends a request for a Larousse volume. Autograph Letter signed: "H. Matisse". 1 page, 6x9, Vence, December 21, 1948. Translated in full: “Dear Mr. Goldschmit / Will you please give to Mr. Gerard Matisse one of the volumes of the Larousse for which I have subscribed. I beg you to accept the expression of my distinguished sentiments.” Matisse wrote this note in December 1948 from his villa in Vence on the Riviera, to request that Gerard Matisse be presented with a “Laroussse”. The Pierre Larousse volumes, to which he refers, were a reprint of one of his major works. Horizontal crease at center, otherwise fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 31 x 21¾. French painter, sculptor, and printmaker Henri Matisse (1869-1954), who was influenced by post-Impressionism, revolted against Pointillism, and became a leader of the Fauvist school, although his later work moved in other directions. He was a master in the use of form and color to convey emotion. A lifelong friend and rival of Pablo Picasso, Matisse shared many similarities with his contemporary. However, he differed from Picasso in that Matisse usually painted from nature.

1812 indenture renting land in Philadelphia owned by Mary Penn, signed by the prolific Peale family member as a witness. Extremely rare signature from the artist! Indenture signed "Rubens Peale" as a witness. Also signed by Mary Penn through her attorney "Thos. Cadwalader" in lower right corner. 2 pages, 21½x14¼ (front and verso). Aug. 1, 1812. This indenture rents an 11-acre-and-100-perches lot of land in Philadelphia to John Craige for eight silver dollars a year. In return, Craige had to erect a brick or stone house on the property worth at least $1,333.34 within two years. American artist Rubens Peale (1784-1865) was one of the children of artist-naturalist Charles Willson Peale. Born with poor eyesight, Peale wouldn't follow his siblings into an art career until much later in life. He became manager and then administrative proprietor of the Peale family's museum of art and science in Philadelphia and began his own museum in New York City in 1825. It was after his retirement from museum directing that Peale began painting, using still life painting as an extension of his interest in natural history. However, his painting career was short lived as he passed 10 years later in 1865, leaving most of his artwork and paintings extremely rare.

Peter Max, born in Berlin in 1937, spent most of his first ten years in Shanghai, and then traveled the world with his parents before immigrating to the US in 1953. Already an award-winning graphic artist and designer, Max burst on the cultural scene in the 1960s, first with his "psychedelic art" and then with a new concept, "cosmic art." Max, who works in many mediums, has been the official artist for the Grammy Awards, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Woodstock Music Festival and 5 Super Bowls. He has decorated a Boeing 747, a Dale Earnhardt racecar, and 265 murals on the US border. He has designed popular US and UN stamps, painted five US Presidents, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the Dalai Lama. He painted individual portraits of 356 firefighters who lost their lives heroically on 9/11, presenting these portraits to the families, and then at President Bush's request designed 356 more for the firefighters' memorial.

In full, as written: "Much obliged for the photo. - The[y] move like the patients in a chiropodists ante-room. But its a good photo. - I see there are the G-darndest plagues going in in Hong Kong - Foo-Chin - Ko-so - Fol-hi and other Chinese settlements on the coast that it aint safe this side of the Big Correl fence - I think any man who will go to China would go to Hell for a Pastime. Did you give Willie Bull-calf a good send off? After it published I wont dare go down - some their skinned glad - will push a new kind of edged tool into my mid-riff cause he think I wrote it. Lots of moon-gazers think I write all the letter press that goes with my pictures. I [two words illegible] lots think you also are a drawer I am now pleading with the Cos - tan to get Clark's M.S.…"

In full: "The letter which I received in Rome, your letter, is very useful to give me joy, and to appease my worries. I know thus that the bust has arrived with Miss Greysby, who took it and conducted it with the greatest care. Miss Greysby was a member of the committee of the exhibition at the Duke of Westminster's, and never lost sight of it, when I was away for one month. It is a permission of Providence, that this bust carried to London to His Grace the duke, it was protected by the Museum of the Queen; Kensington where it was exhibited, among the works that I had given to England, until the day it left the bust at Kensington, has been regarded by the artists and the writers. At the Duke's residence a month before, it was in the approbation of Her Majesty the Queen, the Queen Alexandra and the dowager Queen of Russia. They have been benevolent graces for the bust and for my sculptures. Thus your letter has gratified me. Your solicitude so great in Paris so that, the bust of your dear and illustrious husband, be also to your liking, to your memory, had perfectly succeeded.…"

Abraham Lincoln Life Mask copy by Leonard W. Volk. This mask measures 10 ½ high x 10 wide x 8 deep. American sculptor LEONARD VOLK (1828-1895), who studied in Rome with the help of Illinois political figure Stephen A. Douglas, opened a studio in Chicago in 1859. Closely observing Douglas and his rival, Abraham Lincoln, during their debates, he sculpted both men and did Lincoln's life mask and made casts of both of his hands. Volk's monument to Douglas stands in Chicago and statues of Douglas and Lincoln grace the state Capitol in Springfield, Illinois. The sculptor also did portrait busts of Lincoln and a number of other subjects, including Henry Clay. Fine Condition.

Visually striking 9¾x12½ print of a swan in flight, signed by the French painter, affixed to16x20 card stock Printed Art signed: "G Braque", 9¾x12½ print affixed to a 16x20 piece of card stock. French painter Georges Braque (1882-1963) painted everything from landscapes to still-lifes, his style evolving from Impressionism to Fauvism to Cubism. Braque and Picasso were co-developers of the Cubist style. By the time of his death, Braque was considered one of the great elder statesmen of the art world. Additionally. he is credited with producing the first papier collé picture in 1912. Fine condition.

1987 Lenny Dykstra personally owned, original artwork by LeRoy Neiman Original Artwork titled "Slugger" and signed "LeRoy Nieman '87" 17 x 23. This distinctive work from the most famous name in sports art was apparently either commissioned by or gifted to Dykstra by Neiman and captures "Nails" in the distinctive pinstriped uniform of that glorious World Championship era. The painting is titled "The Slugger" and autographed by Neiman in pencil at bottom right.  LeRoy Neiman (1921-2012) is best known for his brilliantly colored, energetic illustrations. Based in New York City, he is recognized as the consummate sports artist of the 20th century. In 1972 he was named the official artist for the Olympic Games. He was designated the outstanding sports artist in America by the Amateur Athletic Union (1976) and was given the Olympic Artist of the Century Award in 1979, and Sport Artist of the Year Award in 2007. Len "Nails" Dykstra played outfield for the New York Mets from 1985 to 1989, participating in the World Championship. With the Philadelphia Phillies (1989-1996) he reached the World Series again, this time in a losing effort against the Toronto Blue Jays.
