Peter Max, born in Berlin in 1937, spent most of his first ten years in Shanghai, and then traveled the world with his parents before immigrating to the US in 1953. Already an award-winning graphic artist and designer, Max burst on the cultural scene in the 1960s, first with his "psychedelic art" and then with a new concept, "cosmic art." Max, who works in many mediums, has been the official artist for the Grammy Awards, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Woodstock Music Festival and 5 Super Bowls. He has decorated a Boeing 747, a Dale Earnhardt racecar, and 265 murals on the US border. He has designed popular US and UN stamps, painted five US Presidents, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the Dalai Lama. He painted individual portraits of 356 firefighters who lost their lives heroically on 9/11, presenting these portraits to the families, and then at President Bush's request designed 356 more for the firefighters' memorial.

Extremely rare letter written by Andrew Wyeth at his winter home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in 1947 about a painting of the Battle of the Nile. Letters from Wyeth that discuss works in progress and include diagrams drawn by him are rarely encountered in the public market and are highly desirable. Autograph letter signed "Andrew". 2 pages, 7¼x10¼, single-sided sheets. March 16, 1947, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. In full: "Dear Mr. Fisher: Thank you for your letter of the 14th also the prints and material reguarding (sic) the French ship Guerrier. I don't think we need worry ourselves about the figure-head on the ship as the smoke from the foremast quite does away with it. I have followed the prints of the Guerrier very closely when you return this working drawing you might tell me what color the Guerrier was painted. I was most happy to receive the Mavel (sic) Academy Museum pamphlets for my files, more Thanks. The position of Nelson's ship Vanguard in my drawing to the French ship Guerrier. I really think I can make a better water color with this change. Will you mail the drawing back to me as soon as possible so that I can get on with the finished work.…"

The noted western artist pens os Hong Kong and draws two cartoons illustrating where the best scotch in China can be found Autograph Note on Original Art Signed: "Frederic Remington", 2p, 8x6½, front and verso. Matted by unknown individual: 13x11½ (both sides visible). New Rochelle, New York, no date, Monday. On imprinted "Endion" letterhead to "My dear Julian", journalist Julian Ralph. In full, as written: "Much obliged for the photo. - The[y] move like the patients in a chiropodists ante-room. But its a good photo. - I see there are the G-darndest plagues going in in Hong Kong - Foo-Chin - Ko-so - Fol-hi and other Chinese settlements on the coast that it aint safe this side of the Big Correl fence - I think any man who will go to China would go to Hell for a Pastime. Did you give Willie Bull-calf a good send off? After it published I wont dare go down - some their skinned glad - will push a new kind of edged tool into my mid-riff cause he think I wrote it. Lots of moon-gazers think I write all the letter press that goes with my pictures. I [two words illegible] lots think you also are a drawer I am now pleading with the Cos - tan to get Clark's M.S.…"

1812 indenture renting land in Philadelphia owned by Mary Penn, signed by the prolific Peale family member as a witness. Extremely rare signature from the artist! Indenture signed "Rubens Peale" as a witness. Also signed by Mary Penn through her attorney "Thos. Cadwalader" in lower right corner. 2 pages, 21½x14¼ (front and verso). Aug. 1, 1812. This indenture rents an 11-acre-and-100-perches lot of land in Philadelphia to John Craige for eight silver dollars a year. In return, Craige had to erect a brick or stone house on the property worth at least $1,333.34 within two years. American artist Rubens Peale (1784-1865) was one of the children of artist-naturalist Charles Willson Peale. Born with poor eyesight, Peale wouldn't follow his siblings into an art career until much later in life. He became manager and then administrative proprietor of the Peale family's museum of art and science in Philadelphia and began his own museum in New York City in 1825. It was after his retirement from museum directing that Peale began painting, using still life painting as an extension of his interest in natural history. However, his painting career was short lived as he passed 10 years later in 1865, leaving most of his artwork and paintings extremely rare.

Matisse signs a typed New Year's greeting for 1953 on verso of this 6x4 printed version of his self-referential painting, The Painter and His Model Printed Art signed in Ink: "H. Matisse" on verso, 6x4. His typed note in French above his signature, translated in full: "My thanks and my best/ wishes for 1953". The printed card features a reproduction of his painting, The Painter and His Model, from the Museum of Modern Art, Paris. A short version of the title, simply The Painter, is printed on this card. French painter, sculptor, and printmaker Henri Matisse (1869-1954), who was influenced by Post-Impressionism, revolted against Pointillism and became a leader of the Fauvist school, although his later work moved in other directions. He was a master in the use of form and color to convey emotion. A lifelong friend and rival of Pablo Picasso, Matisse shared many similarities with his contemporary. However, he differed from Picasso in that Matisse usually painted from nature. In The Painter and His Model (1917) Matisse also depicts himself in his Paris studio painting in another well-known work, Laurette in a Green Robe (1916). Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.

An original signed oil painting by the artist, titled "In the Beginning". Oil Painting on Canvas Signed: "Charles Bragg" in lower right. Circa 1998. 47¼ x 27¼. Titled “In the Beginning”. Painter, sculptor, and author Charles Bragg (1931-2017) was a social satire artist. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries, commissioned by Playboy, and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. His publications include Charles Bragg on Medicine (1984), Charles Bragg: The Works! A Retrospective (1999), and Asylum Earth (2013). Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 54¼ x 34¼. Frame exhibits wearing at corners.

: "Auguste Rodin", 2¼p, 6½x8½. 25 Via Gregoriana, Rome, 1915 February 5. To Mrs. Mary W. Harriman. In French, with translation. In full: "The letter which I received in Rome, your letter, is very useful to give me joy, and to appease my worries. I know thus that the bust has arrived with Miss Greysby, who took it and conducted it with the greatest care. Miss Greysby was a member of the committee of the exhibition at the Duke of Westminster's, and never lost sight of it, when I was away for one month. It is a permission of Providence, that this bust carried to London to His Grace the duke, it was protected by the Museum of the Queen; Kensington where it was exhibited, among the works that I had given to England, until the day it left the bust at Kensington, has been regarded by the artists and the writers. At the Duke's residence a month before, it was in the approbation of Her Majesty the Queen, the Queen Alexandra and the dowager Queen of Russia. They have been benevolent graces for the bust and for my sculptures. Thus your letter has gratified me. Your solicitude so great in Paris so that, the bust of your dear and illustrious husband, be also to your liking, to your memory, had perfectly succeeded.…"

The painter sketches images of his eight-year-old daughter “dressing up” in a bustle and comments on his art and that of his son Lucien. Autograph Letter signed: "C. Pissarro", 1 page (front and verso), 10x8 which folds to 5x8. Pissarro writes from his home in Eragny to his niece in England of family matters and of his art. Specifically, he thanks her for sending his children clothing and draws two humorous sketches of Cocotte, his eight-year-old daughter, wearing a bustle from a front and side view. He also writes of the completion of his drawings created in the town of Rouen, a favorite locale of impressionist artists. His son Lucien was in Paris at the time of this letter, and he helped his father prepare for art shows from there. Pissarro states that he is forwarding his drawings from Rouen as well as an etching done by Lucien. Like a proud father, he continues to talk about Lucien's work specifically on a children's book which was giving the boy trouble when it came to drawing the animals and father jokes of the final product: "...it will be ready in 2 or 3 days.…"

Carl Anderson, Rube Goldberg, Dick Moores, Jerry Scott, Otto Soglow, Pat Sullivan, and Russ Westover sign and draw their own cartons. Comprises: (1) DICK MOORES. Cartoon signed: "Dick Moores". Dick Moores (1909-1986), a former assistant to Chester Gould on "Dick Tracy" and a Disney animator, is best known for working with Frank King on "Gasoline Alley", which Moores took over upon King's death in 1969. Fine condition. (2) RUBE GOLDBERG. Original Art inscribed and signed: "Love to/Jane Ann/Bodenheimer/from/Boob McNutt,/Mike & Ike/Pearl &/Bertha/Rube Goldberg./Aug./1934". B/w, 6x7¾. Rube Goldberg (1883-1970), who is also known for his complicated contrivances, has drawn the characters from "Boob McNutt", which he introduced in 1915, on letterhead of The Balsams, Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. Horizontal fold touches characters, light horizontal crease at 2 letters of characters' names. Fine condition. (3) CARL ANDERSON. Original Art signed: "Carl/Anderson". B/w, 4x5¼. Pen and ink drawing of Carl Anderson's (1865-1948) comic strip character Henry, who was picked up by King Features Syndicate in 1934. Mid-horizontal fold at blank area. Fine condition.

Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), a leader among the Impressionists, is best known for his landscapes and paintings of figures and flowers. Renoir, who also enjoyed painting his children, also painted Claude, the youngest of his three sons (born in 1901 when the artist was 60), at his easel (1907) and dressed in a clown costume (1909). Limited edition lithograph of the artist's work titled "At the Barber" # 1/200 Limited-edition Lithograph signed: "Norman/Rockwell". 1/200, 19 x 30¼ visible. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) captured scenes from American life in his magazine covers and illustrations, often noted for their humorous and accurate depictions of 1940's and 1950's life. Rockwell's drawings, however, were skillfully executed with minute attention to detail and were so realistic that they usually resembled photographs rather than paintings. He painted over 300 covers for the "Saturday Evening Post" (1916-1965) after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for "Boy's Life". In addition to his many works for the Post, Rockwell illustrated the "Boy Scout Calendar" from 1926-1976. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled at lower blank margin. Worn at left edge. Fine condition. The sports cartoonists who championed “Dem Bums” Original Pencil, Ink and Watercolor inscribed and signed “For Joanne...with love and many thanks from Willard Mullin 1977”. 9x13 visible. Illustration depicts the famous "Brooklyn Bum" by sports artist Willard Mullin. Willard Mullin (1902 - 1978) was an American sports cartoonist. He is well-known for his creation of the "Brooklyn Bum", a representation of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, which was based on Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" hobo persona. He wrote cartoons for several publications including the New York World-Telegram and Sun. This piece comes directly from a family member whose mother was a friend of Mullin and lived in the same condominiums in Florida during the 1970's. As a birthday gift, a hand painted tie was given to Mullin, and in return he gave this illustration. This is one of the nicest depictions of the "Brooklyn Bum" by Willard Mullin. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 22½ x 30½.
