Mrs. Earle Ovington and R. T. Ambrose sign a philatelic envelope honoring the National Air Mail Week May 15-21, 1938.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "Mrs. Earle Ovington" and "R. T. Ambrose/PM", 6½x3½. Printed cachet honors "National Air Mail Week - May 15-21 - 1938/First Plane to/Carry Air Mail/Piloted by Earle Ovington", 6-cent Air Mail stamp affixed, postmarked Santa Barbara, Cal., May 19, 1938. Addressed to Mr. William W. Howes, 1st Ass't PM General, Washington, D.C. On September 23, 1911, EARLE OVINGTON (1879-1936), an early barnstorming pilot, had carried the first mail by air, a journey of 5½ miles on Long Island, with the mail dropped from a height of 500 feet. His wife, ADELAIDE, remembered that when he heard that they were looking for someone to carry the mail, he asked, "Is this the first time it has ever been carried in America?" She has signed this envelope. R.T. AMBROSE was Postmaster of Santa Barbara, California. Communities all over the U.S. were encouraged to participate in 1938's National Air Mail Week by designing their own cachets for air mail flights. Lightly creased and shaded. Pictorial postmark touches the lower portion of the "rle" of Earle, "l" is lightly smudged. Chipped at lower right and right edges. Overall, fine condition.
