AL JOLSON, CHARLES W. MAYO, DANIEL C. GAINEY
A guest roster for the cabaret entertainer Hildegarde, signed by
entertainer Al Jolson, surgeon Charles W. Mayo, and Josten's CEO Daniel C.
Gainey. Extremely rare!
Autograph quotation signed: "Mr. A Jolson "It can be arranged"",
"Mr. & Mrs. Daniel C. Gainey - Owatonna, Minn.", "Charles W. May Mayo Clinic
Rochester Minn.", and 6 unknown signatures 9¾x4. Former synagogue singer and
successful black-faced café and vaudeville entertainer AL JOLSON
(1886-1950, born Asa Yoelson in Seredzius, Russia, now Lithuania),
starred in the first talking picture, Warner Brothers' The Jazz
Singer, in 1927. He also starred in Swanee River (1940), appeared
as himself in Hollywood Cavalcade (1939) and did the voice over for
The Jolson Story (1946). The son of Dr. Charles H. Mayo, CHARLES W.
MAYO (1898-1968) was a skilled surgeon and member of the Board of
Governors of the Mayo Clinic, Chairman of the Mayo Association and a member
(Chairman, 1961-67) of the Board of Regents of the University of
Minnesota. Mayo: The Story of My Family and My Career, The
Autobiography of Dr. Charles Mayo, was published by Doubleday & Company
in 1968, the year of Mayo's death. Known for his Arabian horse breeding,
DANIEL C. GAINEY (1897-1979) was a businessman and CEO of
Josten's, beginning with the Josten's company in 1922 as the company's first
ring salesman, foreshadowing their great success later with yearbooks and
graduation rings. Under his direction, the company went from a small repair
shop in Minnesota to a Fortune 500 Company by the 1960's. During his time as
CEO of Josten's, Gainey began breeding Arabian horses, beginning with a colt
gifted to him during the beginning of his employment with the company. Many
of his horses would become prize winning show horses, and several descendants of
his horses are still widely sought after for breeding. Heavily toned. Right edge
creased, frayed, and notched. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and
creased. Irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
