ART FARMER
Shown playing a brassy solo, the jazz trumpeter inscribes this photo to a fan.
Inscribed printed photograph signed in ink: "To/Rex/Morgan/from/Art Farmer", in black ink. B/w, 8x10. Captioned at lower margin. Art Farmer (born Arthur Stewart Farmer in Council Bluffs, Iowa, 1928-1999) was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhorn player and composer, known for his bebop grassroots and his hegemony in experimental jazz. He and his twin brother, double bassist Addison Farmer (1928-1963), were professional musicians while still in high school; however, Art took off with his own solo career with the release of his composition "Farmer's Market" in 1952. As his career progressed, he joined the ensembles of Horace Silver, Gigi Gryce, and Benny Golson with whom he formed the Jazztet. A composer of over 50 albums, Farmer's also been associated with Clifford Jordan, Gerry Mulligan and Jim Hall. He was famous in Los Angeles, New York and internationally, especially Europe where he continued to tour during the final years of his life. Farmer's music, known for its warm sensitivity, evokes a lucid lyricism that is neither subtle nor gauche, but exact in its melodic extravagance. Fine condition.
