The New York Times owner signs a Newsweek magazine cover trumpeting the paper's victory in the Pentagon Papers dispute.
Magazine Cover signed: "Arthur Ochs Sulzberger", 8½x11. Newsweek magazine of July 12, 1971, featuring a New York Times front page announcing the US Supreme Court's 6-3 decision denying an injunction in the "Pentagon Papers" case. Arthur Ochs "Punch" Sulzberger (1926-2012) was publisher and chairman of the New York Times from 1963 to 1992, succeeding his father Arthur Hays Sulzberger and his maternal grandfather, Adolph Ochs. After passing the post of publisher on to his son, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr., he retained the chairmanship until 1997. He maintained the paper's position as the nation's respected "newspaper of record," although it never enjoyed the largest circulation in the city. In 1971, Sulzberger overruled many on his senior staff by publishing seven in-depth articles on the "Pentagon Papers," a secret Department of Defense study of US decision-making on the Vietnam War. Released to the press by whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg, the papers revealed that US motives for intervening in Vietnam were often at variance with officially stated reasons. The Nixon administration sought a court injunction, claiming release of the papers would damage national security, but the US Supreme Court rejected that claim. Although other newspapers, notably the Washington Post, also reported this story in depth, the Times won a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for its coverage. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
