Typed Letter signed: "Arthur V. Watkins" as Senator, 1 page, 8x10½, affixed to an 8½11 page (2 surfaces). Washington, D.C., 1947 March 13. On letterhead of the Committee on Public Lands to Ralph Errington Ward, Jr., Melrose Highlands, Massachusetts. In full: "Complying with your request, I am forwarding you my autograph to add to your collection. Sincerely yours". Transmittal envelope bearing Watkins' ink stamp frank affixed on verso.Arthur Vivian Watkins (1886-1973), a Republican, represented Utah in the US Senate (1957-1969). Watkins headed the special committee which recommended the censure of Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy, a factor in Watkins' defeat for re-election in 1958. Both during and after his years in the Senate, Watkins took an active interest in Indian affairs, working with limited success to abolish the system of tribal governments administered by the federal government.From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
