AUGUSTUS COOK, ELIZABETH J. PHILLIPS
Autograph sentiments from two unforgettable 19th century actors. Cook signs noting his part in Madame Sans-Gene, and Phillips signs on verso. Two Rare Autographs!
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours sincerely/August Cook/Napoleon/Mame sans-Gene/Minneapolis/Nov. 3rd 1896," and on verso, "Most cordially/Elizabeth J. Phillips" 5x2½. Augustus Cook was a notable stage star of the late 1890's and early 1900's. Having performed in 6 Broadway shows, Cook is most famous for his portrayal as Napoleon Bonaparte in 1895's Madame Sans-Gene. Outside of acting, Cook had infamous, violent relationships with his many wives, the worst account being when he stabbed and assaulted his wife Evelyn Cooke and her servant in 1897. Charges against Cook, surprisingly, were eventually dropped. Canadian-born actress ELIZABETH J. PHILLIPS (1830-1904) made her first stage appearance as "Grace Harkaway" in London Assurance (1852). Later moving to America, she became the leading lady of Pike Theatre Company, F.F. Mackay's Stock Company and Palmer's Theatre Company. With a career lasting over 50 years, Phillips is most remembered for her breathtaking Shakespearean dramas. Toned. Fine condition.
