First Day Cover signed: "Baruj Benacerraf", 6½x3¾. American Red Cross FDC, 18-cent The Gift of Self American Red Cross 1881-1981 stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D. C., May 1, 1981, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Benacerraf, who held the Fabyan Chair of Comparative Pathology at Harvard, was co-recipient of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with George Shell and Jean Dausset for discoveries concerning the genetic regulation of the body's immune system. Benacerraf, a Venezuelan-born scientist, who had joined the faculty of the New York School of Medicine in 1956, was a professor in pathology there by 1960. From 1968-1970, Benacerraf was the chief of the immunologic laboratory of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. Famed for his research in immunologic response, he attained the Fabyan chair at Harvard in 1970. Fine condition.
