BASIL RATHBONE. Partly Printed Contract signed: "Basil Rathbone", 1p, 8½x22, front and verso. Carbon "Rider", initialed "BR" in ink, affixed with tape to first page, 1p, 8½x11. New York, 1953 March 4. Countersigned by a representative of the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre and Academy, which has hired Rathbone "to render services as an actor in the part of Shakespeare's Readings in the ply now called 'An Evening with Will Shakespeare" for $1,000 per week plus 10% of gross box office receipts above $20,000 (but not over $500). From 1939-1946, Rathbone was Sherlock Holmes in 14 films and on the radio. After his Shakespeare readings, he returned to his detective character in Sherlock Holmes, a play written by his wife, Ouida Bergere. It was a failure, opening on Broadway on October 30, 1953 and closing the next night after three performances. In later years, Rathbone recorded Shakespeare for Caedmon Records. Lightly creased. Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. The "h" in Rathbone is lightly smudged. Rider is creased. Overall, fine condition.
