Ben Turpin signs an album leaf and draws a self character in black
ink.
Signature: "Always wear a/smile/Ben Turpin/Beverly Hills, Ca,"
1p, 4¾x4-3/8. The classic comedian, who was known for his crossed eyes
(which he insured with Lloyds of London) has drawn a figure with crossed eyes to
the left of his inscription. After joining Mack Sennett's studio in 1917,
Turpin found great success in film parodies of silent screen greats of his
day, including Rudolph Valentino. Turpin had made film comedies since 1907
and worked with Charlie Chaplin in 1916, leaving for Sennett because
the two did not get along. Slightly yellowed. Otherwise, fine
condition.
