BENJAMIN CHAPIN
The actor's signature on a letter head from Liberty Theatre in New York, where he first portrayed Lincoln in his one man show. Extremely rare!
Autograph sentiment signed: "Sincerely yours/Benjamin Chapin", in black ink, 8½x5½. Actor Benjamin Chapin (1872-1918) based almost of his success in his uncanny likeness to President Abraham Lincoln, first portraying Lincoln to a wide audience in his one man play Lincoln, which was written, directed, and produced by him. Chapin was praised for his spot on portrayal of the President by audiences and critics, and was even well received by those who closely knew Lincoln. Following the play, Chapin appeared as the President in over 10 films and shorts following Lincoln's life, many of which were again produced and directed by Chapin. These proved highly successful in theatres but only saw a limited release, with the actor independently releasing several of the films from his own finances. He planned to continue releasing more Lincoln films over his career, but died of tuberculosis in 1918. Third right section of sheet completely separated from left most sections, interesting Chapin's signature. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso.
