Photograph signed: "Billy Eckstine". B/w, 3¼x4½. Billy Eckstine
(1914-1993), the first Black romantic singer of popular music, had also
broken down color barriers as the first leader of a bop big band.
Eckstine, whose hits include "Prisoner of Love", "My Foolish Heart" and "I
Apologize", influenced a number of soul and R&B singers, from Sam Cooke to
Prince. Eckstine also played trumpet, valve trombone and guitar. His legendary
jazz orchestra from 1943 to 1947 included such bebop innovators as Art Blakey,
Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughn. Fine
condition.
