BLANCHE THEBOM
Blanche Thebom signed this letter, typed on her personalized stationery in 1953, to thank the recipient for remembering and praising a concert she had given in Santa Cruz. Thebom was the Met's lead mezzo-soprano for over 20 years.
Typed Letter signed: "Blanche Thebom", 4½x6¼. No place, 1953 March 5. On personal letterhead to "Dear Miss Pitzer", in full: "How very kind you are to have written to me and to have remembered my concert in Santa Cruz a few years ago. I hope this short note expresses to you my sincere gratitude and my great pleasure at your letter and the kind words it contained. Most sincerely". Thebom (1918-2010) was the Metropolitan Opera's lead mezzo-soprano for over 20 years (1944-1967), giving 356 performances there of 28 roles in 27 operas. She was the first American to sing at the Bolshoi Opera in Moscow, performing Mozart. After retiring from the Met she directed operas in Atlanta and Little Rock, Arkansas until 1980. She also taught it in those cities and, more recently, in San Francisco and performed on concert stages and in regional musical theater - including, no doubt, the Santa Cruz performance that she mentioned above. Right edge trimmed unevenly. Horizontal fold crease. Otherwise, fine condition.
