BOBBIE KIMBER
A rare sentiment penned by the female impersonator and
ventriloquist
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best Wishes/Bobbie Kimber", in
black ink, 6x5¼. A female ventriloquist in a time with a lack of female
ventriloquists, Bobbie Kimber (1918-1993) was actually a female impersonator
and ventriloquist, putting on the persona of a woman to help bolster his
popularity. Wearing his hair long and dressing like a woman on stage, Bobbie
Kimber performed with his puppet named Augustus Peabody throughout
London, and found great success with his act. During his popularity, most
people genuinely though Kimber was a female, and there is some debate as to
whether he chose to live his later life as a female or male, though wide reports
state that Kimber often dressed in female clothing outside of performances.
In 1952, Kimber confirmed his gender, and much of his popularity waned
soon afterward. Light surface creases. Paper remnants on right edge. Edges and
corners slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
