BUTTERFLY McQUEEN
Butterfly McQueen signs a photocopy of her resume.
Photocopied Typed Resume signed: "Butterfly McQueen" in ink on second page, 2p, 8½x11, separate sheets. McQueen, who lists herself as "An ageless actress, singer, dancer, writer", has made several handwritten additions. On the first page, under "Hollywood, New York and TV Movies", she has added a credit from 1983. At the top of the second page, McQueen has written: "One Woman Show given yearly/Personal appearances [ditto marks under "yearly"]". Under "Television Shows", McQueen has added: "Good Morning America -83/(Two appearances) '83". Name of agency on first page crossed out in pencil. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Slightly soiled at upper portions of both pages. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by Carbon Typed Letter, unsigned, 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1984 July 19. To Ms. Butterfly McQueen, New York, NY. In full: "I am delighted to know of your tentative 'yes' to appear at our August Autograph Show. Not only can you phone me collect at the above number [not present on this copy], but let me give you two more numbers where I can be reached: [the writer, Jerry Granat, then gives a toll-free and another number]". The letter continues: "Please ask for me person-to-person. Thank you and good wishes (you don't need luck) when you appear at the University of West Virginia. Most sincerely". Lightly creased. Paper clip stain at upper left margin, minor carbon marks at other portions. Overall, fine condition. With Photocopy, unsigned, 1p, 8½x11. Illustration of "Miss Butterfly McQueen/'Prissy' of/Gone With the Wind" at upper portion, magazine article at lower margin. Captioned: "DAVID HARTMAN demonstrates his techniques on MIKE DOUGLAS ably assisted by BUTTERFLY McQUEEN on the MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW." Photocopied signature at left margin. Ink notes (unknown hand, but probably by Granat) at lower portion. The ink notes refer to McQueen signing autographs at her own table and mentions getting photographs for her to sign at the show or at home. Lightly creased with folds. Magazine article is dark. Usual black marks on sheet from photocopying. Overall, fine condition. With Magazine Article, unsigned, 3x6, taped to 8½x11 sheet. Typed at upper margin: "LETTERS, NOTES, AND CARDS LEADING UP TO OBTAINING BUTTERFLY MC QUEEN FOR AN APPEARANCE AT ONE OF OUR UACC AUTOGRAPH SHOWS." Article is lightly soiled with usual black marks from photocopying. Taped to sheet at upper right margin, irregular right edge. Mounting sheet is lightly creased. Fine condition. From the collection of Jerry Granat, an autograph collector and dealer who was a member and a Director of the Universal Autograph Collectors Club (UACC). Granat had written an article in the UACC newsletter about McQueen's work with students and faculty in Paducah, Kentucky, and it was met with such positive response that Granat was asked by the club's President to invite McQueen to appear at one of the club's shows. McQueen made her first appearance at an autograph show on Sunday, August 26, 1984 at the Hotel Omni in New York City. She was paid $200 for her appearance, at which she signed glossy photographs for UACC members. Thelma McQueen (1911-1995) was only 13 when she joined a theater group in Harlem. She was nicknamed "Butterfly" after dancing in the butterfly ballet in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. McQueen debuted on Broadway in Brown Sugar (1937), and two years later, she played her first and most memorable movie role, that of Prissy, the young slave, in Gone With the Wind. After being typecast as a sobbing maid in several films of the 1940s, McQueen grew tired of the image and retired from films in 1947. She continued intermittent theatrical engagements and returned to the screen in the early 1970s (Amazing Grace, 1974; The Mosquito Coast, 1986). In 1975, at the age of 64, she received a Bachelor's Degree in political science from the City College of New York. Four items.
