GARY MIDDLECOFF. Carbon Typed DS: "Cary Middlecoff" in ink, 1p, 8½x11. Memphis, Tennessee, 1951 October 29. In letter form to Grey Advertising Agency, Inc., New York, New York. The golfer agrees to endorse McGregor Sportswear. Begins: "Gentlemen". In part: "In consideration of the sum of $1.00 and other valuable considerations, I do hereby certify that I am twenty-one (21) years or more of age and I hereby give my consent to and do hereby give and grant to David D. Doniger & Co. (McGregor Sportswear), its subsidiary and affiliated companies, its or their agents and assigns, for the period of one (1) year from the date of signature hereon, the right to use and publish my name, photograph likeness, and my statement substantially as it appears below for the purpose of advertising and publicity in connection with McGregor Sportswear in advertising media and material in total or in part...." Statement not inserted. Also signed by a witness. Cary Middlecoff (1921-1998) is often remembered for his glacial pace of play, his occasionally volcanic temper and his nickname Doc, which he earned for being a qualified dentist. Middlecoff, who won his third tournament as a pro in 1947, won at least one more in every year until his retirement in 1961. When he hung up his spikes, his 37 career victories were seventh on the PGA Tour's all-time list, and he had also bagged a U.S. Open and two Masters titles. Middlecoff was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1986. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the first "d" of Middlecoff. Usual carbon black smudges (document completely legible). Staple holes at upper left corner, two file holes at upper blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
