Signature: "New York, Dec. 28th [18]89/Chauncey M. Depew", 6½x1¼. Chauncey Mitchell Depew (1834-1928) was an attorney for the Vanderbilt railroad interests and President (1885-1899) and Chairman of the Board (1899-1928) of the New York Central Railroad. He was elected New York's Secretary of State on the Union Ticket in 1864, and received 99 votes for the Presidential nomination at the 1888 Republican National Convention. He declined an offer from President Benjamin Harrison to serve as Secretary of State. From 1899-1911, he served as U.S. Senator from New York. Toned and worn. Multiple notches at edges. Adhesive residue at top edge. Edges frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
