CAROL BURNETT (b. 1935) is best known for her long-running
(1967-1978), The Carol Burnett Show, which won numerous Emmys
for both the program and its individual stars. Originally a nightclub performer,
Burnett became frequent guest on the variety shows of Steve Allen, Ed Sullivan
and Jack Parr before achieving stardom in the 1959 off-Broadway musical,
Once Upon a Mattress. She won her first Emmy (1962) during a
three-year stint on The Garry Moore Show, and her second for an
appearance with Julie Andrews at Carnegie Hall.Her feature films include
Pete 'n' Tillie (1972) and A Wedding (1978), both of which notched
Golden Globe nominations. She also appeared on Mad About You, as Helen
Hunt's mother, a role which won her yet another Emmy in 1997. Altogether
she has been nominated for 20 Emmy Awards, winning six times. ALAN ARKIN
(b. 1934) made his Oscar-nominated Hollywood debut as a Russian naval
officer in the gentle but hilarious sleeper The Russians Are Coming! The
Russians Are Coming! (1966). The following year, he demonstrated his
versatility by offering a chilling portrayal of a villain in Wait Until
Dark. Further acclaim greeted the actor in 1968 when received his second
Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a deaf-mute in The Heart Is a Lonely
Hunter. He continued riding high in 1970, when he played Yossarian in
Mike Nichols' serio-comic adaptation of Joseph Heller's
Catch-22. Five years later, he earned a second New York Film
Critics Circle award for his work in Hearts of the West. His career
enjoyed a second wind in the 1990s, with the actor appearing in substantial
roles in a number of films. Some of the highlights included Edward
Scissorhands (1990), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and Grosse Pointe
Blank (1997). Nearly four decades after his first Oscar, he scored
another as Best Supporting Actor in Little Miss Sunshine (2007). He
is the father of actors Adam and Matthew Arkin. Fine
