CLAIRE RUTH (MRS. BABE RUTH)
She signs acceptance of acceptance of commissions to be paid in 1962 to the trustees of her late husband's trust.
Carbon Document signed in ink: "Claire Ruth", 1 page, 8½x13. Document titled Trust U/W George Herman Ruth: Computation of Trustees' Commissions for Trust Year Ended February 2, 1962. Each trustee is due $142.25 as commission on the principal, and $234.79 commission on the income from the trust. Claire (Hodgson) Ruth (1897-1976), who as a teen-ager had dated baseball legend Ty Cobb, met Babe Ruth, an even bigger superstar, in 1923. The Babe, separated from his wife since 1920 and leading quite the swinging life off the field, began to see Claire, and married her after his first wife's 1928 death in a house fire. A socialite who enjoyed the limelight, Claire was at least partially successful in taming "the Babe," who partied, drank and womanized less than before and fawned on Claire's daughter from a previous marriage. After Babe Ruth died in 1948, Claire took on the role of representing him to baseball. She reportedly lobbied the baseball commissioner to put an asterisk after Roger Maris' 61 home runs, which broke the Babe's old record of 60 in a season but required a longer season to accomplish this. However, in later years she was warmly encouraging of Hank Aaron's successful bid to top her late husband's lifetime home run total of 714. She is buried beside the Babe in Hawthorne, New York. File holes at upper margin. Fold creases, not near signature. Lightly chipped at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
