CLAUDE RAINS
Warner Bros. grants permission for Rains to appear in the Charles Rogers film, Angel on My Shoulder, and agrees to delay commencement of two subsequent Warner Bros. films to which Rains is committed by prior contract.
Document signed: "Claude Rains", 2 onionskin pages, 8½x11. Burbank, California, 1945 June 29. Rains signs acceptance of a letter from Warner Bros. modifying the terms of his contractual obligation to that studio so that he may appear "in the role of the warden" in the picture Angel on My Shoulder. In so doing, Warner Bros. agrees to delay production of its next film with Rains, but extends the term of his contract for an additional six months. English actor Claude Rains (1889-1967), who played the title role in The Invisible Man (1933), was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1939 (as the "bought" Senator Paine in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington), 1943 (Inspector Louis Renault in Casablanca), 1944 (title role in Mr. Skeffington) and 1946 (Ingrid Bergman's Nazi husband in Notorious). Rains did appear in Angel on My Shoulder (1947) as the Devil (a warden of sorts, one might argue). He then fulfilled his commitment to Warner Bros. with two 1947 films: Deception and The Unsuspected. Staple holes and rusting at top left corner. Corners lightly creased. Minor notches at right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
