CLIFFORD ODETS. Typed Carbon DS: "Clifford Odets" in ink, 1p, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1943 October 20. In letter form to: "RKO Radio Pictures, Inc./780 Gower Street/Los Angeles, California". In full: "The agreement of employment between us dated July 27, 1943 provides for the payment by you to me of the final installment of consideration remaining due at the time of the delivery by me to you of the completed Work. I have, pursuant to such agreement, completed and delivered to you the completed screenplay for the motion picture tentatively entitled 'NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART'. I do hereby acknowledge receipt of the said final installment of consideration in the amount of Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00). I do hereby that the three (3) week period referred to in Article 4 of the said employment agreement shall commence October 4, 1943." Carbon copy of original document, but authentically signed. Dramatist Clifford Odets, who wrote Waiting for Lefty, Awake and Sing, Golden Boy and The Country Girl, adapted the screenplay for None But the Lonely Heart from a book by Richard Llewellyn. Odets also directed the film, which starred Cary Grant, Ethel Barrymore and Jane Wyatt. None But the Lonely Heart received five Oscar nominations, with Ethel Barrymore winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film was also chosen as one of the year's ten best by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures and "The New York Times". Staple holes and light paper clip impression at upper blank margin. Fine condition.
