The United States Congressman penned his signature on this handwritten letter to a collector
Signature: "Compton I. White”. 8x10½. Dated May 14, 1942. Letterhead from the House of Representatives Committee on Irrigation and Reclamation. Name typed underneath. In Part: Assuring you it is a pleasure to be of assistance”. Compton Ignatius White Sr. (1877-1956) was a United States Congressman who represented the 1st district of Idaho from 1933-1947 and 1949-1951. He first demonstrated an interest in politics when he joined the Clark Fork Board of Trustees. He worked in a number of different industries, including lumber, mining, livestock farming, and railroad operations. A galena (lead and silver) mine was discovered on his property in 1925, making him a wealthy man. He used his wealth to become more involved in state politics, losing the election to the state house in 1930 before winning in 1932. His son, Compton Ignatius White Jr., also represented Idaho's 1st district, from 1963-1967. Lightly toned. Mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
