CONRAD JANIS
The actor signs this black and white 20th Century-Fox publicity photo for 1947's The Brasher Doubloon
Inscribed Printed Photograph signed in Ink: "To May/ Conrad Janis" in black ink, b/w, 8x10 overall, 7x9 image, one surface. 20th Century-Fox publicity photo for The Brasher Doubloon (1947). The Brasher Doubloon was a film adaptation of Raymond Chandler's The High Window. Janis starred as Leslie Murdock, the spoiled, larcenous and murderous son of wealthy widow and Philip Marlowe client Elizabeth Murdock. Multi-talented Conrad Janis (1928-2022) has appeared in almost 100 movies and TV shows since 1945. His TV roles have included Mindy McConnell's father Fred in Mork and Mindy(1978-1982). (Sci-fi comedy is nothing new to Janis; he was also boss-from-hell Otto Palindrome in 1978's Quark) Janis also appeared in 13 Broadway productions between 1945 and 1978, including the 1952 Theatre World Award-winning play The Brass Ring. A musician as well as an actor, Janis is a self-taught Dixieland trombonist who freelanced between acting jobs in the 1950s and has been the leader of at least two jazz bands: Conrad Janis and His Tail Gate 5 (which appeared alongside him in the Broadway play Marathon '33, 1963-1964) and the Beverly Hills Unlimited Jazz Band. Janis became a director in 1994 with The November Conspiracy and has directed two other movies since then: Bad Blood (2006) and Bad Blood... The Hunger (2009). Lightly toned, soiled, cracked, creased, and bowed. Signature has low contrast and is lightly smeared in places, but remains legible. Lightly rounded, worn, and creased corners. Black ink notations on verso in an unknown hand. Lightly discolored at right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
