DAME GENEVIEVE WARD
Clipped sentiment and signature of the American-born Continental singer and actress
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours sincerely/Genevieve Ward", 3¾x1½. Clipped from the closing of a letter. Genevieve Ward (1837-1922), the granddaughter of New York Mayor Gideon Lee, received her musical education in Europe, and appeared on Italian opera stages in the late 1850s, with soprano roles in Stella di Napoli, Lucrezia Borgia and Don Giovanni. Having become through marriage the Countess of Guerbel in 1856, she employed the stage name Ginevra de Guerrabella. She sang Robin Hood in London in 1861, and La Traviata in New York in 1862. Illness ruined her voice in the latter year, so she taught music in New York for a decade. In 1873, however, she returned to London stages in dramatic roles, beginning with Lady Macbeth. A long acting career followed. Ward was most famous for her portrayal of Stephanie de Mohrivart in Forget-Me-Not, making the first of over 2,000 appearances in that role in 1879. She was still performing Shakespearean character roles in 1920 and 1921, and was honored with a DBE in the latter year. One horizontal fold. Irregularly cut at edges. Slightly creased. Tape affixed on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
