DAME MARIE TEMPEST
Signed British picture post card of actress Dame Marie Tempest sitting in a chair and wearing a long white gown
Picture post card signed "Marie Tempest". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand.B/w, 3¼x5¼ overall, 3x4¾ image, one surface. Captioned: "Marie Tempest.". Photo by Lallie Charles. British post card. British actress and singer Tempest (1864-1942), born Marie Susan Etherington, performed in light opera and comedy for over 50 years. She debuted in 1885 as Fiametta in Franz Suppé's operetta Boccaccio in London, England, and became international famous two years laterfor her performance in the title role in Alfred Cellier and B. C. Stephenson's Dorothy (1887), which ran for a record-breaking 931 performances. Tempest continued to appear in operettas in the United States, Canada and England - most notably in Carmen, Manon, Mignon, The Bohemian Girl, The Pirates of Penzance and, in 1890, creating the role of Kitty Carol in The Red Hussar - before turning to comedies in 1899. Comedies gave her a chance to combine charm and roguishness, something that she reportedly specialized in. Some of her standout comic roles were in Peg Woffington, Becky Sharpe, The Marriage of Kitty, English Nell, Caste, Mrs. Dot - possibly her finest performance - Passing Brompton Road, The Cat's Cradle and The First Mrs. Fraser. Nöel Coward reportedly wrote the role of Judith Bliss in Hay Fever (1922) specifically for Tempest. She continued touring until 1941, with her 1935 jubilee that was attended by King George V and Queen Mary. Lightly toned, silvered, soiled, creased and bowed. Lightly rounded and creased corners. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Otherwise in fine condition.
