DAN MARBLE
Signed sentiment of "the Gamecock of the Wilderness," clipped from the closing of a letter
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours truly/D. Marble", 3½x1 slip affixed to 3¾x1¼ card. Danforth "Dan" Marble (1807-1849) made his New York stage debut at Chatham Gardens in Fortune's Frolic (1831), but spent most of his brief but colorful career with a traveling troupe. Known as "the Gamecock of the Wilderness," Marble specialized in Yankee dialect, portraying comic characters like Robin Roughhead, Sam Patch and Deuteronomy Dutiful. He visited England in 1845, and was an immediate hit on London stages. Marble married actress Anna Warren in 1836. Adhesive residue at face (not affecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
