Extremely rare signature from the British based drag impersonator, signing with warm wishes for the New Year
Picture post card: "with Best Wishes/for the New Year/Danny", in felt tip, B/w 6x3¾. Often calling himself a "comic in frock", performer Danny La Rue (1927-2009) was a singer and drag impersonator, performing often as Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Judy Garland, and Margaret Thatcher. Beginning with an interest in theatrics as a child, La Rue pursued a career as an entertainer after a short stint in the Royal Navy, performing often in London's West End and at one time owning his own night club in Hanover Square. He is one of few drag impersonators who have replaced female leads in performances, replacing Avis Bunnage in Oh, What a Lovely War!, and for most of his career had a heavy presence in London theatrical productions. La Rue also made several television guest appearances as himself, including several appearances on the game show Blankety Blank (1982). He passed away in 2009 after suffering from a stroke and battling prostate cancer. Corners and edges slightly worn. Signature slightly scuffed in some areas, but clearly legible. Image slightly faded. Fine condition.
