DAVE "WIZ" WHITNEY
Extremely rare signature from the Negro League player turned successful basketball coach, writing his jersey number for the Kansas City Monarchs
Printed card signed: "Dave Whitney/Kansas City Monarchs/#23", in black ink, 5x3. Dave "Wiz" Whitney (b. 1930) was a well-rounded sportsman through high school, being proficient in football, basketball, baseball, and track. In 1952, Whitney left straight from his high school graduation ceremony to his first game with the Negro League Kansas City Monarchs, proving to be a powerful player used to replace player Ernie Banks, who had recently left to join the MLB. However, Whitney was looking to make a career out of his playing and when the Negro League refused to sell him, he left to coach high school basketball. He later joined the college ranks, joining Alcorn State University as their basketball coach, becoming the winningest coach in conference history with 496 victories and 12 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles. In 2010, Whitney was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Fine condition.
